I have SCE&G as my electric company. I don't believe that I have any other options. (This is I need to look into, but I'm pretty sure it's them or nobody.)

that's the first part. (south carolina electric and gas=SCE&G) Second part, is that they just informed everyone that their rates will be increased by 50%. Well, my electric bill, in a three bedroom, is over $200/month already. I'm moving tomorrow, to a two bedroom (duplex) and was looking forward to the gas heating and water heater. I've been told it's less expensive. But then I realize, that SCE&G also said that the gas prices are higher as well, so I really won't be benefiting from the gas at all.

I'm extremely conservative. Nazi about it even, I never turn lights on, I scream at my household if they do...and especially if they leave them on. I haven't turned on my a/c unit in a month. Open the windows. and when it's cold, if you're cold, put a sweater and some booties on with a scarf if you have to. I never use the dryer, all clothes are hung on racks to dry.

My point is, I can't figure out why my electricity costs so friggin much, and why I don't have the option of going somewhere else. What can I do?

Energy costs all around are up due to high oil prices.

Move.
I mean to another city or something.
We have the same problem here in Vegas. Unbeknownst to most people, the Hoover Dam does *not* provide electricity to Las Vegas proper... at all. The rates here in the city are outfuckingrageous. 2 summers ago, when we hit near 120 degrees for a week straight (that may not seem like much, but try keeping a whole house cool enough to live in when it doesn't get below 105 at night for a while with highs like that all day long), the electric bill for the month of July was damn near $600. Last month, we got a letter stating that they are raising the price of utilities again by something like another 35%. They do this every single year.
There is no other provider here in Vegas proper to go to for electricity. We are raped every summer (last year, without lube - the air conditoner died and we had to buy a new one. $3.8K).

Now, the folks about 20 min away that live in Boulder City... THEIR electricity DOES get provided by the Hoover Dam. Their electric bills are lower than half of what we pay normally out here. Not only that, but their gas (natural gas I mean) is cheaper, water is cheaper, and taxes all around (I believe) are cheaper. The land value is a bit more expensive - you will easily pay $400K for a house there. But, overall, it is much cheaper to live there than it is to live inside Clark County.

So... like I said... move lol :)

Go get an oil based heater it will save you a ton of cash - they actually sold so well vendors couldnt get up with demand over the past month - they just started re shipping them out. Will cost you about 50 bucks up front but over the winter it will drop your heating costs.

Maybe someone in your household is growing pot or turning the heater/AC on when you are not looking. :dunno:

I didn't know people actually had electric based heaters

with heating a way of life in the great white north, everyone's had natural gas furnaces forever

Get a small space heater and tell people to suffer and die if they don't like the temperature in your home.

Check around and see if there are any co-op electric companies near you, Ashly. They generally are cheaper if you can join.

i almost choked my sassy mouthed old roomate for getting nazi about the electricity. I finally had to move out when she had a mental break down after her black boyfriend left her. It was pretty awesome really to see. I mean how fucking undesirable do you have to be to get left by a black guy? LOL.

So don't go down the same path Araby... First its the electricity, then its a life of sex and the city and black guys leaving you to eat excess amounts of icecream in front of the TV while you cry.
