try a diff't IM program and see if the problem exists there too

Have you run AdAware and SpyBot search & destroy and a virus checker recently? It almost sounds like you're the victim of a DNS re-direct or something, where when your system goes to look for the ip address of someplace you try and get to, it can't resolve anything until it gets to like the 3rd or 4th backup or something.

If you haven't run them recently, go get those two programs, asap, install them and run them. You might also go do the Kaspersky online virus scanner and see if it finds anything.

Heheh, I figured as much. When all else fails, assume viruses and/or spyware. Did this fix your Firefox problems also? Guessing it might well have.

Now that you have those progams, you probably want to run them at least once a week or so, to keep your computer as clean as possible. You may also want to invest in a memory-resident virus scanning program, either from Norton or from MacAfee, and keep that running on your system full time. Not too expensive, fortunately, like 20-30 bucks.

Leah I had the same problem for awhile and nothing I ran ever really fixed it...it seems like it just hibernates for awhile then comes back once in awhile to tick me off, then goes away again. Sometimes I close the window and reopen it again and then it's fine. Back when it did it all the time I ended up just using yahoo or something else for awhile, stupid msn.
