Was in beta a while back, a stress test maybe? Not really sure what it was, but I had a shit load of fun for the week I played. I made a played around with a wizard, a fighter, and very very briefly a rogue.

I played it for a few months, and it wasn't terrible, just nothing memorable, either.
It's very easy to get into, and it consists of instance runs of small groups. Soloing isn't really viable, and there is little endgame.
Levelling is very slow, and the game is very repetitive. It's like Guild Wars without the wars.
If you are looking for something that is low drag and easy, then this is for you. It is a far inferior game to EQ2 and WOW, though, so if you are looking for an upgrade to those, you'll be disappointed.

Levelling in D&D the pnp game was slow... if I remember correctly, I played a character for like 3 years and he was lvl 7 or some shit.

Here's my problem with DDO as an online game.
You can't make soloing not an option or a real limited option if you want to keep people long term. DDO almost requires you have a set group to play with.
If I have a set group to play with, why am I spending 15$ a month x 4 people or more when we could just get together and play real D&D and have alot more fun doing content we like, not what the developers decided to put in?
Or even if we couldn't get together for the real thing there's always neverwinter nights, no fee to play that every month.
Other then that it was okay but like Lyion said, nothign memorable.

At 15 bucks a month w/ no high end game I don't think it's going to last very long, or it's just going to garner the casual player, and it will not be very successful. You do level slow but I still hit level 2 in like 4 hrs or something, just doing the begging solo quests. It's a pretty game and it schould be, although I think most characters look like shit, the enviroments are beautiful. Doing the quests with the cheesy DM voice is kinda nice like a throwback to doing real PNP games.
To answer the question about set gaming groups, one it's hard to find people that you can acctually stand being around, all having the same nights off a good place to play and what not. That's why MMO's in general work so well, there just so many people to play with. Realistically how many people in your WoW / EQ / EQ2 what ever game you do enjoy acctually live in the same state as you? 5 6 maybe more, then how many of those people live within 45min of were you live. In the 6 years that I played EQ I knew of 4 people that lived w/ in an hour of me. One was 15min away and we were pretty good friends Epcylum if anyone remebers him. The others were Pavalon Slyikibar, and Hornfell, who were all RL friends who lived like 45min to an hour away.

That's my point.
DDO in it's current form almost requires you have a set group. If you don't have a group that all plays the same time for the same amount of time, you are going to have troubles if you get behind the leveling curve of the server.
If I have to have a set group I'd just as soon play the real thing or if my "set group" can't all meet together, there's always NWN.

'DDO is supposed to supplement your normal D&D experience.
I don't just create adventures, I become them...'
BG's UI, paper dolls and all is a better UI with better itemization (yay for pawn shops with +5 bastard sword of a,bc, bane at level 10) and an actual plotline.

QFT, although I'd argue Planescape: Torment is equally good.

I never did play Planescape, though i wish I had. If I ever see it in a bargain bin somewhere, I will most assuredly pick it up. BG2 was most excellent though, indeed. I'd love a Baldur's Gate 3 someday, though I doubt it'll ever happen.
