It's based on how much current or desibles they are running though each channle of the audio stream. Although a bit more complex than that. If you had mono stereo You would hear it from both headphones at the same time, and if you just had stereo speakers you wouldn't hear the direconality of it, just one headphone to the other based on how much current they are running though each channle. This I'm assuming is working on a 5.1 channle band, as most pc's w/ in the last 4 years or so have at least 5.1 sound built into the motherboard. I ran this though my home reciver and it sounded about the same although it didn't sound like it was coming from above or below me it sounded like it was coming from to my front, sides behind me and so on. But with wearing headphones the source is much more limited in it's direconality that it can come from so it sounds like it's coming from above and below. It's based around current THX sound technology, anyone can hear the same thing from any newer action sifi movie if they have a good surround sound system, positioned correctly.

dude, it went beyond going from left to right side, i could hear it go ABOVE and BELOW on my right and left side, that is really amazing,
yeah, can you imagine being in a dungeon, especially in WOW by yourself, and hearing twigs pop or voices giggling but not being able to see anything..... wow

that's another reason it's called wow

The only time I really hear it above or below is at the very end, on the right channel. It's really convincing though. I wouldn't think it has anything to do with 5.1 though. I do have a 5.1 surround card but I'm just sending stereo only to a stereo receiver, which is driving my headphones.

I think what impressed me the most was that I was using fucked up headphones I got with a new walkman for $4 over a year ago.
Now I'm gonna have to actually listen to a Pink Floyd Album. Though after thinking about it, I was able to find a small tribute in a black metal album from 96'.

Speaking of headphones...
I'm looking for a really nice set of headphones for gaming, but dono where to begin looking. Price isn't an issue, and ideally I'd like a headphone/mic combo - anyone have ideas? Oo

I donno much about headsets. There are some pseudo-5.1 sound headphones; they are wide and have multiple speakers in them. I don't know if there are any like that w/ mic attatched.

I use those, don't ever get a USB headset if you plan on using it for gaming.

I am completely convinced that my 100 dollar pair of Sennheiser's are the best headphones I have ever heard.
You should check out that brand... I have two pairs of their wraparounds and one of the big DJ looking kind that really sound totally kickass.

When the matches were being shaken on the right side, up and down behind you, I got uneasy.
That was really cool though.
