Howard Stapleton, a businessman and former electronics apprentice at British Aerospace, was so sick of youths hanging around outside his shop, that he decided to do something about it.

What he's come up with is a new gadget that repels gangs of teenagers by emitting a high-pitched noise that can usually only be heard by those under twenty.

It sounds to youngsters like an extremely close and loud insect. Police are backing the 'Sonic Teenager Deterrent', it's been nicknamed the 'Mosquito' because of its sound. It annoys teenagers so intensely that they have to clutch their ears until they decide they can no longer stand it and move on.

The black box that sends the signal can be attached to the outside wall of shops, offices and homes, and sends out 80-decibel bursts of pulsing sounds at up to 16khz. The body's natural ability to detect some frequency wave bands diminishes almost entirely after 20, so it can only be heard by younger age-groups and has no effect on adults.

Howard says he used his four children as guinea pigs. After he came up with a prototype of his device, he tested it at a local shop. "I got it so that only my kids hated it and my fianceé and I were completely unperturbed", he said.

And it seems to be serving its purpose. "We put up the prototype outside the store and almost immediately people stopped congregating", he added.

I don't care if it's illegal. Holy shit, if that thing is for real, I am pre-ordering like 10 fucking CASES of the things, strapping them to my car, and driving down every damned hangout including the LV strip, North Las Vegas, and every shopping center in town.
And, I'm gonna go to a movie theater on a Friday night and sit right in the middle of all those fucking teeny boppers all talking on their cellphones, and set off like 5 of the things.
It won't solve any real problems, but I sure as hell will feel a lot better.

Im 31 and I bet I could hear it. Not only am I emotionally arrested at about 17 , but I also have pretty astounding hearing for all the abuse Ive subjected my ears to over the years. Can hear CRTs turn on through walls and floors. They emit a super high pitched tone I can still hear.

When I read the title of the thread, I thought the guy invented something that simulated work which would repels all those lazy ass teenagers.

I don't care if some teenagers want to hang out in my lot. At least they aren't smoking crack. I would think that this would scare off paying customers but whatever.

I don't see how it would be anymore illegal than their loitering is

as for scaring off paying customers, I doubt a customer coming in to get something would hear it long enough for it to bother them.. it sounds like it's intended to grate on your nerves if you sit there 'hanging out'

I, for one, am less likely to go in a store where a bunch of kids with nothing better to do are blocking an entrance than a store that's free of nuisance. When I was a teen (all few years ago!) I wasn't one of the ones who hung out in front of stores; the ones who did were typically there trying to hustle people into buying them cigs or talking shit about anyone who walked through the door - I'd want to repel them, too.

I love to bust a good mcdonalds fart whenever I have to walk past a crowd like that.

Ok, I am glad someone else can here the buzz that monitors make, tv sets also make one and it drives me crazy sometimes. No one else ever notices it

Are you sure its not just the radation from the earths yellow sun that give you more than super human hearing?

i can hear TVs from another room too

i also enjoy listening to several different conversations around me when i'm in a busy place

i think your hearing stays stronger if you use it, like a muscle
