A Florida schoolgirl won top prize with a science project that proved toilet water is cleaner than ice in most fast food restaurants. Yes, you read that correctly. If nothing else, you can definitely say the results are tough to swallow.

The young girl, Jasmine Roberts of New Tampa, set out on her project with a simple premise. "My hypothesis was that the fast food restaurants ice would contain more bacteria that the fast food restaurants toilet water", she said.

To test her theory Jasmine visited five fast food restaurants near the University of South Florida. She collected ice samples from self-service dispensers inside the restaurants, as well as ice from drinks served through drive-through windows. To collect the toilet water, she flushed the toilet once at each restaurant, and used sterile gloves to gather samples.

She then placed the samples into sterile containers and had the samples from each restaurant tested at a lab.

What did she find? She found that 70% of the time, the ice from the fast food restaurant's contain more bacteria than the fast food restaurant's toilet water! And even more suprising, of the bacteria found in the ice, three out of the five restaurants tested positive for fecal coliform or E. coli, organisms that come from the feces of warm-blooded animals.

Jasime won the school's science fair with the project, and hopes to win the top prize at a regional science and engineering fair.

I know all this, and suspect worse. Yet I still go to fast food places. Hard to re-program yourself sometimes.

One thing I was curious about was how chlorinated and/or treated the toilet water was since she flushed before collecting. I mean 0 bacteria compared to the amount of bacteria found naturally on any surface would make the latter seem like a lot.

Fecal coliform can be airborne, but the e coli is a little different..that's probably just from really sloppy ice handling when they load the machines. (Look for the machines that make their own ice rather than some sloppy motherfucker draggin a dirty 5 gallon bucket to pour in it.)

Another disturbing thing I saw at a burger joint was the nasty mofos handling money, then working with the fries and or scooping ice and then letting the ice scoop fall back -into- the ice, handle and all.

Hah this post made me throw out my fast food drink i had earlier and pour my own, with clean pristine ice from me own icebox.

Yeah money is nasty, people dont wash their hands enough at places.

There was a study done quite some time ago by a college student who sampled the sweet tea from various national chain fast food places - he found that the majority of them were positive for fecal coliform. It was found that the employees were not washing their hands after using the restroom and then later sticking their hands into the tea to mix it.

It's gross, but it's not really dangerous. In fact it's actually a good thing to let your kid eat the cookie they dropped on the floor (with a reasonable amount of time, of course) - as this helps them build resistance to various types of microorganisms. Studies have shown that people who as children were overprotected by their parents tended to have more health problems in adulthood.

Only redeeming quality of McDonald's is the McGriddle breakfast sandwich thing, even though I haven't eaten McDonald's in probably a year I still recall its glorious taste.

I love Chicken Express Sweet Tea. It is the best 100 gallons for $.35 and if there was poo in there, I still wouldnt care, I would still drink 100 gallons of it when I went into my mom's town.

My first job was McDonalds. I saw the bucket, and it was gross. No ice from there. But anywhere else, Ice please. If I didnt see it, it didnt matter.
