Star Wars: Empire at War

picked it up yesterday, and its easily the best star wars strategy game ever. past games either let you fight land, or space battles, never both like this. and battles are about battles, not chopping trees. the only resource to gather is $ which comes automatically from each planet you control. and heroes can make or break a battle.

Boba Fett is the biggest bad ass hero on either side, in space he flies Slave 1 and can drop seismic charges like jango did against obi wan in ep 2. i managed to obliterate over a dozen x-wing squadrons with one charge once i got them wrangled up in a dogfight with TIE's during a LAN game. there was much swearing after that

great game so far, though i've heard internet play is buggy. on the LAN however there wasn't any problems.

you can DL the singleplayer demo, and there's a ton of mods for the demo that unlock all the ships/planets, and turn the enemy galactic AI on(so it attacks you), and you can get a taste of what the full game is like. though the demo only has one planet map. so it's at least worth a look

Did you get your free plastic death star? Damn thing scared the shit out of me. Had it sitting next to my cell phone and somehow the fucker just went off around 3am for no reason.

On topic--I haven't heard anything other than this game lives up to the hype and more. haven't had a chance to install it but prolly will tomorrow.

nope, no death star

i didn't pre-order, just walked in and bought it.

edit - 1.02 is out now, 2 patches in 2 days. this one is aimed at helping internet multiplayer issues ppl were having. they seem to give a shit about fixing their product

just finished a pretty fun online campaign. the guy built 0 fighters for some reason, and put all his $ into mon calamari cruisers. during the battle i peaked at about 8 squadrons of bombers out at once, with 15-16 TIE fighter squads, and a planet based cannon for support. it was concentrated murder

afterwards i blockaded his homeworld and destroyed it with the death star.

sounds like he played Terran a tad too much in Starcraft.

I used to just fend off everyone until I could build like an armada of the destroyer things and then buttrape the other players in about five minutes.

thought i'd bump since they have a new expansion coming out. complete with Super Star Destroyer, and Death Star II. faggoty rebels can die~

also there is the eclipse class star destroyer. for you non-nerds that's an even bigger ship than the SSD Executor, complete with death star-like super laser. but it seems to be only for the new "corruption" faction

so, is it worth spending $$$ on this game?

No.

probably not unless you're a star wars nerd. imo it's a good RTS, the galactic conquest with dozens of planets to fight on in multiplayer is pretty unique from what i've seen. and the expansion will add another dozen, along with an entirely new faction.

somewhere along the way I missed the RTS part

I was hoping it would actually be a space battle game =\

Its a very tough RTS. No space battles. Good graphics. Nothing revolutionary.

If you're hardcore into Star Wars and in the mood for yet another RTS, its an ok purchase.

I personally didn't care for it. Its gathering dust on my shelf.

I still have the original Xwing vs Tie Fighter online only game from 10 or so years ago. That was an awesome game!

Are there used game stores nearby? I'm sure you could nab it cheap from one of them.

My kid is a star wars freak, so no go on shipping this one away.

ya it's not like x-wing v tie fighter. it's more like star trek armada.

if you didn't play that. then imagine starcraft, but battlecruisers/wraiths and carriers/scouts have to fight in space. and after that battle is over, then the winner gets to land ground troops for another battle on the planets surface. unless you play skirmish mode, which is more like a regular RTS: where you build units during the battle, and it's either land only, or space only, decided at the start of the game

ps - TIE Fighter > *

edit - you might wanna try Battlefront 2 if you liked x-wing v tie fighter. in that you can land your starship in the enemies hanger, jump out, and start pwning ppl inside their own ship. or even take out the shields while onboard, and take off to bomb all the unshielded capital ship components(engines/bridge/etc)
