JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Zambia has budgeted just over $4,000 to fight bird flu this year, outraging local media commentators who said the funds were too little to combat the deadly H5N1 strain that reached Africa earlier this month.

A Treasury official said the government had set aside 20 million kwacha ($4,334) in its 2006 state budget for the health ministry to tackle a possible pandemic.

The privately owned newspaper The Post said the sum was less than the 70 million kwacha allocated to wrestling, a sport with little appeal in Zambia.

"We need to pay special attention when it comes to improving our preparedness for a pandemic," the Post said in an editorial.

Africa's first confirmed cases of the lethal H5N1 strain of bird flu were reported in birds in Nigeria this month. H5N1 has killed at least 92 people in Asia and the Middle East.

African governments are rushing to register medicines and set aside millions of dollars to deal with a bird flu outbreak.

Impoverished Zambia is already struggling under the twin burdens of AIDS and malaria and could prove fertile ground for human infections from bird flu, with millions of rural dwellers living in close proximity to backyard chickens.

It must be nice to have millions to spend on fantasy. 92 people died on two continents lets throw another couple billion dollars that way while 300 people a day die in the Sudan. Bird flu, SARS, e Bola...it's all coming to a TV station near you. Get your anti bacterial soap ready! Jackasses, we've goten along for hundreds of years without that fuckin shit. Get real people, you're such sheep.

Yes, because we should wait until our centuries version of the Black Plague is in high gear before we do something about it.

Read the CDC Report on the H5N1 virus.

New influenza outbreaks of which we have no real built up immunity are extremely dangerous, and could cause massive death. Sure, there's a chance nothing will happen, but in this case, it's better we are prepared.

Fighting a probable highly pathogenic and easily spread thing is one of the few no brain political issues we have right now.

I'm thinking we should let it fly. 1 billion dead, the rest build up immunity, world population problem solved for another 50 years.

I wish a plague would come... it would most likely devastate places like the middle east, africa and south america because of their shit, next to nothing, medical infrastructure while we all sit around popping antibiotics and viagra laughing our asses off with huge boners while all the crappy parts of the world rot.

Can you imagine that shit hitting here? people would get a small cough and go batshit and start raping and pillaging figuring they'd be dead before they went to trial anyways.
