Any of the linux people here every tried using reiser4 FS? I have been thinking about trying it out on one of my comps. In theory reiser4 is increadable, just want to know if its as good in pratice as it is in theory.

I've seen a few blurbs about it. Anything very cool with it, Gid?

From what I have read, it’s about the fastest thing around; in some of the benchmarks it absolutely destroys ext3. It’s plug-in based, this way it’s actually upgradeable without reformatting. They also did away with the balanced tree algorithms and switched to dancing trees.

If you just read the specs it sounds amazing, only thing that has held me back is that no one I know has used it and would prefer to hear about its stability from someone I trust. Probably just going to install it on one of the comps that isn't my main machine and see how it goes. If it corrupts or isn't stable, no loss.

Wonder how it compares to JFS in regards to larger servers.

On a side note, you built a MythTV machine right? I just did a Home Equity loan to pay off a few bills and have some cash aside for a new Plasma and want a MythTV setup to go with it. Any tips?

I know from me this will sound way out there but, skip the mythTV and get either a http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=387, put together a cheap machine and put Windows MCE on it or get an XBox with XMBC. Its considerably easier to setup, does everything a mythTV does and more.

I replaced my myth box with an XBox running XBMC. I dont regret the change for a second, not to mention the XBox outputs in HD and my myth box didn't. Keep in mind however, I dont use my XBMC to watch TV, just to watch movies, DVD's and play music from my fileserver, have a HD DVR from comcast for watching TV. If you plan to run your TV through it, go with the windows MCE. As great as linunx is, a myth box just isn't the best for what your trying to do.

If mythtv is really what you want to do, make sure you have products that are sure to have drivers, especially your TV Tuner. I would read throught he mythtv howto before getting any of the hardware. I hear Knoppmyth is good, though I ran mine on a slackware box which was a major pain in the ass to setup. I am sure it would be much easier on a gentoo or fedora box where you can emerge/yum the install.

I like Linux, but I'm into functionality. If it doesn't do what I want, I'm not going to get it.
