Shockwave/Video is too dark

I really hope someone can help me here. My monitors brightness can be set so high that web pages snowblind me yet video and shockwave vides/games are very dark. Is there any way to fix this? I've been trying for 6 months to fix this but I'm starting to think the PC is fucked up.
Any help is extremely appreciated. I can sometimes alter the brightness in some windows media etc movies but with shockwave I cannot adjust the light.
By the way--some movies in windows media player will not allow me to slide th ebrightness adjustment up. it keeps popping back to the middle.
