I've done a lot of scuba diving in my life. The best diving I ever did was in the Galapagos Islands at Darwin's Arc (sp?). I was surrounded by countles Hammer Heads, Black Tip Sharks, and Galapagos Sharks. I was lucky enough to see a very large Whale Shark that I was able to swim up to and sit on. I've always wanted to do more adventurous dives, such as diving with Great Whites. But shit! After watching that I definatley don't want to go scuba diving with squids!

That's cool man. I've wanted to go to the Galapagos Islands ever since I was a kid.

Go for it Eldred. I dive, my dad has been diving for 30+ years. Nothing like it. As close to being in 0 G and on another planet as youll ever get. Just make sure you go to a place with a good reputation to take classes.

God I have always wanted to go scuba diving, but I have this mix of wonder and fear, I'm suppose up until now fear has won out. I would absolutely love to be able to ride a whale shark, or see a giant turtle up close.... but I am afraid of Mr. Squid coming for me.

I will the next time I'm around someplace that I can, I don't have much time for travel now though.

I have a NAUI certification, only level 1 though. Took a class my first tiem around in college; we went out to Puget Sound to do our open water testing. Unfortunately, it was the only time Iv'e been diving, but it was definitely a blast. Also unfortunately, we did it in February, so the water was completely f'ing freezing, and we had to be in full body wetsuits, including hoods. (ye gods, those are awful, feels like your head is in a vice or something).

Even with all the negatives though, i had a great time. Saw lots of fish, anenomies, etc. Had a scallop chase after me like a mini-pac-man, conked a reef fish between the eyes and barely got my hand out of the way when it snapped at me... good times all around, I'd definitely go again, hopefully someplace even more exciting, and warm enough where I wouldn't have to wear much of a wet suit. My Aunt used to go on diving vacations all the time: Belize, Australia, Hawaii, etc. Lucky lady. heh.

Fuck the sound diving... bleh if you liked it there and still want to dive you need to find some warm water to go jump in...

God I froze my nads when I went in the Puget Sound, I had to do some underwater mapping and navigation as part of my Divemaster Cert in that frigid water /cry.

My hubby has his instructers license. he use to teach diving in Hawaii, Texas and on a cruise ship. I'd love for him to open his own dive shop one day. We went on a dive in Puget Sound as well a few years ago...agree about the freezing your ass off.

Cold.....in western washington....the puget soun?!?!?!?!?!?! I dont fucking believe it.

Shocking, isn't it! Especially in February! Honestly, once the water in the wetsuit warmed up, it wasn't TOO bad, but yeah, it was pretty bloody cold. Hell, our instructor actually wore a dry suit on the dives, rofl.

I definitely want to go again, someplace much much warmer. Had I been working full time these past few years, I no doubt would have by now, but it's definitely on my "to do" list once I'm back working and can afford going.

I still have the gloves/boots/mask/snorkel/fins I used back then too. I rented the wet suit, though, so wherever I'd end up going, I'd either need to go someplace where you didn't need wetsuits, or rent one there.

I tried that once with my dumb friend Jason in Okinawa. Not a smart move....to add insult to injury I managed to get caught in a damn current and had to eventually go to the bottom and just crawl my way back to shore. Not fun.

Haha good ol Kowalski was going for his advance cert while I was doing rescue with Randy and that fucker threw up and passed out at 50'.

I look down and he’s laying there floating about 5 feet off the bottom off the ocean floor with tons of fish swimming around him and he was face down.. I though he was dead but when I swam down to him I found out he just threw up then passed out...

What an ass hahaha

I love the water and I've snorkeled many many times. I've always wanted to SCUBA and will probably try a rec dive when I go on vacation. I have a few friends that are into it and dive every chance they can. However, I have super sensitive ears and had a lot of ear infections when I was a kid. I think I've outgrown it for the most part since when I fly now it doesn't bother me but I was always worried that I'd have a hard time with it diving. How hard is it to get use to that?

If you can readily get your ears to pop, it shouldn't be any trouble. Also, don't dive if you're stuffed up, bad things can happen. My dive instructor was telling us about one time he did that. Apparently the hole that goes up into the sinus area (and the hollow sinus bones) is pretty small. He dove, and was fine down at the bottom, but when he came back up, that hole was plugged solid, and he thus had several times the volume of air in those hollow spaces than normally fit in there. He said it was the worst headache in his entire life, and he sat there for an hour alternating hot and cold packs before the blockage finally gave way, and he could hear the whistling sound of the air escaping, and his headache immediately faded.
