LOS ANGELES - Third-place Nintendo showed off its next-generation game console Tuesday, taking shots at its rivals as it promised that "Wii" would be about improving the actual game experience, not just high-tech graphics.

Nintendo said Wii would be released in the fourth quarter of 2006, but did not give a specific release date. Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, said pricing details for the console will be announced later.

CNBC's Jim Goldman reported that he had unofficially been told to expect a price tag of between $249 and $299 and a release date similar to Sony's PlayStation 3, which is Nov. 17 in North America.

Nintendo also showed off its unusual wireless controller, which looks a bit like a large TV remote. Players can use it in different ways depending on the game they're playing — as a golf club during a golf game, or as a bat in a baseball game, for example. Sony on Monday unveiled a controller that also uses motion-sensing technology, but to a less dramatic extent.

If the $249 report is correct, the Wii would be priced at more than half the cheapest PS3 and substantially cheaper than Microsoft's Xbox 360, which was released last fall.

This would be in keeping with Nintendo's general console strategy, which has been to emphasize its relative low cost and family-friendly games. While the Wii will have only slightly more power than Nintendo's current GameCube system, both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 took huge leaps in power and boast high-definition graphics.

Sony is the dominant player among video game consoles, with 64 percent of the market. Microsoft has 16 percent; Nintendo 13 percent.

Fils-Aime took indirect aim at its rivals' high-tech strategy at the news conference Tuesday, a day before the official start of the video game industry's annual conference, the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

"What we're unveiling is the next leap in gaming, to a place where playing is no longer just about looks, it's about the feel," Fils-Aime said. "Where it's no longer confined to just a few, it's about everyone. And most of all, the next leap is not about what you see. ... The next leap is about playing, because playing is believing."

He added that the next version of the popular “Legend of Zeldaâ€

I'm more interested in seeing Wii then PS3 actually. This'll be more than just updated graphics with the same tired gameplay.

this is the console i will be buying. The other two seem like weak computers, but this one is actually looking like it will offer things a computer cant.

Wii is the only way to fly. You can buy a Wii (plus a second controller and 2 games) and XBox 360 (plus a second controller and two games) for the price of a PS3. XBox 360 is underperofmrming the only thing that keeps it going is XBox live, and PS3 is gonna be a big bag of suck. The Wii is gonna be able to be able to go online (this is how you get almost the complete catalogue of Nintendo games, you simply connect to the game server and download them) games like Smash Bros is going to have online play (HAWT!) and the new 3-D mouse idea will crush the competitors.

the PS3's potential to playBlu-ray dvd's, be a networked media server as well as having a big stable of games makes it really attractive to people too

By the time PS3 omes out and Blu-Ray is a viable option for home movies the Chinese wholesale companies will be producing them at such a reduced cost that you'll be able to buy one from walmart for a hundred dollars (look at DVD players). As for the stable of games you'll be able to access almost every title nintendo has ever released on the Wii, there's nothing that can compare to that. Networked Media server? XBox 360 can already do that, and noone does it.

xbox requires a fileserver running MCE, which is retardedly stupid


I've got over 800gb of movies on a fileserver that I currently stream to my HTPC. I'd definately do it with the PS3

And as for the nintendo games you can access, that's slick, but you have to buy each one you download, they're not free

Blu-Ray is Sony's version of HD-DvD. Sadly it's going to get crushed by HD-DvD the same way the VHS crushed Beta when they tried to get greedy. Mitsu-something or other the company that owns the rights to HD-DvD has already said they are willing to lose money on players by forfeiting their patent rights and letting the Chinese companies start producing them right out of the gates. Plus a majority of the movie houses are backing HD-DvD as well as Microsoft.

toshiba owns HD-dvd and i've heard no such nonsense about waving patent rights


besides, sony owns 40% of all movie titles ever made, so whatever sony chooses, especially if they get 14+million PS3's sold as planned will go a long way towards settling the format war

every other movie house will support both formats until blu-ray becomes the defacto standard
