I had a long post and quote, but the Gods of Cyberspace decided to sieze it from me.

On one hand I don't mind them doing phone checks for patterns, if it solely relates to Al Qaeda.

On the other, I for the life of me, can't figure out how mining millions of phone records has anything to do with the war on terror.

Although this is completely anonymous and there is no listening. The point of this is to learn calling patterns, with no tapping. But why?

Given the secrecy around all of this, I don't think we can say what they are and aren't doing. What we know now is that they are maintaining a massive database of every call placed by certain phone companies since 9/11. We also know that they are listening into phone conversations of suspected individuals. Who can say that there isn't a link between them?

I think all of this is quite creepy.

I'm unclear on how they can extrapulate(sp) truely usefull data from the patterns. They have to have "something" first, a name of a terriorts, a number of a terrorist, etc. If they have that "something" first, why are they "sweeping" us all into that bucket.

For those that think WTF is the big deal, don't do bad shit and you don't have to worry. Think about any privacy right you have and I'll put that in your face. Why not a camera in your car that you can't modify just to determine if you're speeding. Why not a recorder in your living room that you can't turn off to make sure you don't do drugs or drink too much. Yeah those are extremes but only extreme now. When the feds assimilate the majority to think "whats the big deal" and recording calls is the norm, what then, camera's in your car? When does it stop?

I'd like to see one usefull arrest they've made that had to do with terrorism since the data capture began. Until then all you "give up my rights for freedom" shits can kiss my ass.

For whatever it's worth, and the guy could have been lieing but here is a story for you.
I used to work for a small consultant company, the owner/boss had a prior life when he was young. He worked at the NSA as a civilian working on some of the "star wars" BS from the Reagon era. Now the star wars that he worked on were not "star" at all, it was essentially a system like what you see on modern military ships, but a bigger scale. Most navel, if not all have a turret of sorts that can shoot down "many / most" airborne launched projectiles, they are 100% computer driving. This guy worked on some of the code for the grand-daddy of this, it was meant to be used all over the coast lines but with a MUCH greater scale / distance, etc. bla bla
To my point:
He told me a story once that I just couldn't believe being a kid myself (20ish). Saying you know the NSA records and catalogs every outbound communication from this country, every phone call, every e-mail, every fax, EVERYTHING. I'm like sure old man, you're nuts.

In retro spec I'm not sure how nuts he was. I also don't know that I can trust a government that says shit like this. Whose to say this shit hasn't been going on since the technology was available? There is no reason to think this hasn't been going on for decades, not one reason.
