If you are looking for a good one to play I'd say try ROTK7. It was the first in the series where you could play as the ruler, or just as an officer and work your way up through the ranks. It also has the character improvement portion that allows you to build up your guys stats and skills.
You could also play ROTK10. It is perhaps the most open of the games as you can do everything you can in 7 as well as form a free army with no allegiance and attack castles and join in on battles in progress kind of like mercs and be paid for your help. They also introduced the abilitiy to have sworn brothers ala Zhang Fei, Liu Bei and Guan Yu. You can also have a rival and it is possible to get married as well. I don't believe children can be born but it is easy enough to create children in the character creator and assign them to be your children.

I take it this is the precursor to the Samurai Warriors / Dynasty Warriors series?

nope, not really
koei made a whole string of games involving all the same characters
Destiny of an Emperor is probably the best 2d RPG of all time
there's i think 5 games set in 2nd centuty china with all the same cast of characters

ive probably played rotk II almost as much as ive played EQ and im not even joking, but then I got ahold of rotk III and its even better imo. The thing I like about the older ones is they are less complex as the new ones and you get to play as entire kingdoms instead of just one dude.
I've tried the newer ones but just couldnt get into them, but my Snes is still hooked up just for these games which I have seriously played daily for like 14 years.
this is the best series of games ever made imo.. I got hooked on the story when i was like 8 years old when I beat destiny of an emperor for the first time which is a very very good rpg and you are missing out if you have never completed it.
ps another good game just liked these which is a bit easier is gemfire. its from koei and is for the genesis/snes(different characters though) also so you can get a rom of it.
