Vanguard: Beta Screenshots Leaked

In an attempt to defend against all the Vanguard haters, this Beta veteran snapped a bunch of screenshots of beta including his FPS. As he expected, he was swiftly kicked out of beta b/c of the obvious NDA violation.

You can read about his machine and see the pics here: http://www.fohguild.org/forums/retard-r ... rd-ss.html

looks fucking terrible. There are zones in the latest EQ1 expansion that look better.

Disheartening performance numbers (though obviously a limited sample-still 2 gigs of ram and 1024x768-lol?). Do ATI chipsets even have SLI support? If not, that's going to disappoint a good number of enthusiasts (which you have to be to even consider playing Vangaurd). Seems safe to say that nVidia/intel will be the recommended chipset with SLI if you want a framerate above 10-20. Maybe Brad has a 's3cr3t s@Uc3' decoder software that he's waiting to unveil when Vista comes out... or maybe Microsoft parted company with Sigil because they don't.

Nice sunsets though!

Need to remember they are running graphics debugging in the background as well as numerous other bullshit resource hogs in early betas.

If this was a stress test, I would be worried.

ATI has "SLI" its called crossfire, but it sucks. Regardless if you are rocking an ATI 1900 series card or an NVIDIA 7900 GTX you shouldn't need SLI to play one of these games.

I was mistaken in an earlier post but SLI/Crossfire only increases performance by about 20 percent.

If those shit screenshots require you to have SLI/Crossfire the game has been fundamentally desired horribly.

I play oblivion which has better graphics with an ATI X800 XT card without a problem.

More disheartening is the mass exodus of beta players who proclaim the game to be complete garbage.

Even if the game were visually stunning, it still would come down to gameplay. Look at Asherons Call 2 for a great example of that.

I read an interesting thread over at Fires of Heaven's board about this game...

The game and its designers are being plagued by the fanbois who want the game to be super difficult with no niceties such as a mapping feature etc and have been deemed a major negative influence on the game.

Combined with the awful optimization of the game, the lackluster graphics and terrible gameplay and a community of l337 dipshits hellbent on providing stupid dialogue to the developers I think the game is doomed.

If anything the game will release and take a year+ to unscrew all the bad decisions they have made so far.

The MMO industry is in dire need of a game with a more realistic edge versus WoW's cartoonish/kiddy look and feel. The game should be difficult much the way EQ is. What I don't think is a good idea is to go back to how original EQ was without any means to travel easily, no mapping and the entire experience to be a complete painful grind.

I think current EQ is a fantastic game. If they just took that, updated the graphics and created a much more complex fighting system they would be golden.

I think any modern day MMO should have varied content as well. You should be able to solo meaningfully or fight in groups and there should be top tier raiding as well.

I had hoped Vanguard would fulfill the hole that is open between EQ and WoW but I don't think it is going to happen.

Believe me, I am not defending the game in the least, but I have extensive beta experience and it ALWAYS improves from early betas to more open stages.

This game very well could suck the fat one. I just don't take random reviews with much credit...

Something to be considered though... This game has been in development for what 2 years? And beta has been going on at least 7 months?

Even in the earliest phases of WoW beta there were many positive things said by the testers.

A game in this stage of development with nothing but negative press says a lot about the possibility of it being a good game.

The game has been in development for over 4 years now.

WoW beta was insanely/retardedly well done compared to any other beta I've ever been in

I ran into less issues in wow beta than I did in any other single beta ever

that being said, I really hope they don't do the mapping bullshit

that gay'd up EQ hardcore =\

I think VGuard should have a diablesque type of mapping. A map creates as you go.

I don't have a problem with it mapping the spots you've actually been to.

I really hated when they added mapping to EQ, i found it really dumbed things down quite a bit

Anarchy Online.

Early betas were golden, but the last couple weeks of beta for Anarchy Online were complete shite. When it went gold, hardly any of the original beta testers continued to play.

Go figure.

Anarchy Online sucked from beginning to end from my personal experience with it.

I was in an early beta, stayed up until about 2 months after release and gave the account to my father.

He played it for years afterward...I fucking hated it. Buggiest piece of shit ever...

I'm actually with some of the posters Ralf talked about. I remember early EQ, and I remember some of the most stupid and insanely boring game mechanics they built in and absolutey inflexibly refused to consider changing. Remember having to sit there and stare at your spellbook and nothing else if you wanted to get mana back quickly? How fucking retarded is a game mechanic that forces you to, you know, actually *NOT* look at the graphics you spent millions on? /boggle

Remember having to group to get binds? Remember only a few classes being able to actually solo? Remember hours-long corpse recoveries? Those weren't fun, they were annoying and frustrating. How "fun" was it for those SoV people to spend what, 12-14 hours of dying repeatedly just to get their corpses back from Fear?

It took Brad LEAVING SOE/Verant before the game really got its improvements. And, when you think about it, what DID he produce anyway? He took a DIKUmud and set it to 3D graphics. That's it. Hell, I remember a huge thread where one of the original DIKU developers was all set to sue him for violating the "make no profit" portion of the DIKU license, as it was widely believed that EQ's core code was taken straight from those text-based DIKUs. Literally, speaking as someone who helped run a major DIKUmud, huge sections of gameplay ideas were directly ripped off of DIKUmuds, and Brad was a big-time DIKUmud player. Hell, DIKus started out really early, too, years before EQ ever existed. I played a DIKU as early as 1991, actually.

I agree with Arlos.

Brad was NOT that great of a designer. The original EQ is a total ripoff of many text based muds I used to play, but with graphics.

I quit EQ like 8 times in the first six months because it was so completely fucked up.

The game got immensely better after Brad left and has improved ever since.
