How about an open source MMO or version of Everquest?

This weekend I went ahead and installed some highly rated Oblivion mods and was surprised how many of them were nothing short of brilliant.

I was thinking how cool it would be to if Sony/VI were to create three test servers and pair each with a live server and then release the development tools to the masses.

Then allow the masses to create and modify the living hell out of the game. Have the modifications go live on the test servers and institute some sort of DKP/community rating system about the mods.

The people would vote on the developers mods based upon scope, difficulty and whether they like the wanted the modification to go live. The people developing the mods would then earn points to prioritize their live implementation and testing of their mods.

I couldn't imagine just how freaking awesome EQ could become if they could attract the attention of the modd'ing community with corporate backed servers and infrastructure.

The whole idea of an open source MMO would be amazing. It's a shame Oblivion couldn't turn into something like this.

Thoughts?

basically shards of dalaya is open source EQ... it's all based on player feedback and it's completely original .. the only way it resembles EQ are the basic mechanics and the graphics.... all items, skills, mobs, etc., are different. it's pretty fun but i never leveled anything up very far

UO did something really similar to that

there were tons of player run "shards" with hugely varying rulesets

the one my brother kinda co-ran was based on WOT rules ;)

I did think of shards of dalaya, but I am thinking of something on a grander scale. Something really backed by a major company. I think one of the reasons oblivion is so successful is that it was meant to be modd'ed from day one.

If I ran my own EQ server I would have batman lay waste to Rivervale.

oblivion wasn't the first one to come moddable, either. i think morrowind even came with a map editor.

open source has worked for shit like Freespace 2 or Descent 2 (D2X represent!) when they released source code and ppl got it to work on different operating systems, etc. it would be cool for an MMO
