Well, if you think about it, it's a pretty nice edge over only ever producing one at a time. Increases chances fertilization is going to take place, and increases chances that at least one will survive to term.

I read an article once about a study being conducted on the theory that twins in human beings may be far more common than birth records would indicate because they come to term far less frequently (usually failing in embryonic stages, before it's readily detectible). It also suggested that left-handedness (a trait far more common in twins than in single births) might actually only occur solely in sets of twins, and that single birth lefties are actually the surviving half of a set of twins where one embryo/fetus did not survive to term.
