SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officials are looking to capture some of Lake Tahoe's biggest polluters: Canada geese.

A sewage spill at the lake last summer "is nothing compared to what's happening with these geese," said Jack Spencer, a federal Department of Agriculture wildlife biologist.

Spencer said the bottom of Lake Tahoe is covered by up to two inches of goose feces in some areas. A 10-pound Canada goose can produce four pounds of nitrate- and phosphate-rich feces every day it waddles across the beaches, lawns and golf courses of Tahoe.

The birds find refuge on Tahoe, one of the most protected lakes in the nation, when they molt their primary wing feathers in the spring and can't fly.

Spencer and other biologists from USDA Wildlife Services hope to trap up to 400 Canada geese at several Tahoe locations this week, at the request of property owners and managers.

"We only work where we are wanted, where there is damage occuring," Spencer said.

The geese will be innoculated for disease and released to a wildlife management area in eastern Nevada. About 1 percent of juveniles may return, and about 15 percent of adults will return.

The birds are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Act, but can be hunted. In recent years, rules have loosened to help urban areas deal with the birds.

The Tahoe roundup is part of a regionwide effort. The geese also pose a threat to jets flying in and out of the Reno Airport, Spencer said.

Canada geese have stopped migrating in a triangle that includes Tahoe, Reno and Carson City. Abundant food sources from turf landscaping has resulted in increased densities within that triangle.

"I guarantee you, in the old days, Lake Tahoe was just a stopover place," Spencer said.

Fifteen agencies are involved in the roundup, including the Humane Society, which will provide food for the captured birds.

That's because stupid friggin idiots feed the bastards bread...which only makes them shit more and then they stick around. There's a lake near here that's covered in the stupid birds. You used to be able to swim there but not anymore, the water is too polluted.

Every time I hear "Oh mommy, let's go feed the birdies!" I wanna bust out a baseball bat.

I fucking hate Canadian geese.

you need to dredge the lake, and make it deeper

no word of a lie

geese don't like deep water (they're literally bottom feeders)

we did that a couple years ago to the man made lake in town here, and now there's almost no geese in it at all~

Uh, Tikker, Lake Tahoe has a maximum depth of 1645 feet, and has an AVERAGE depth of 1000. It doesn't get a whole lot deeper than that as far as lakes are concerned...

Somehow, I think dredging Lake Tahoe is not exactly feasable...

Geese can be pretty damn vicious, yeah. It's even been known for some people who are keeping tame geese to train them as guard animals.

My highschool here in Penang, Malaysia had a problem with crows for a while. They decided to pay students RM1 (about $0.30) for every crow we killed and turned in. They quickly learned that it was a bad idea. Kids kept nailing each other with sling shots on accident.

Rochester, MN has a bad problem with these geese. Actually, they have so many of the stupid geese there, they named the local baseball team after them (Rochester Honkers). There's a park in town, called Silver Lake Park. Nearby, one of the businesses (I forget what this business did) had hot water as a business waste. As far as I know this water was clean(ish), but they'd pour it into the lake. As a result the lake would not freeze over in winter, so geese would stay here all year round in thick flocks. I don't even know how many inches of goose shit is at the bottom of that disgusting lake. There is a path leading around the lake that's so covered in poo you can barely differentiate it from the rest of the grounds. It's a foul place. And yeah, they have the goose feeding stations set up as well. I know there's a ban on shooting them and fines for killing them because at one time they were thought to be extinct.... but I think those days are long over.
