Okay so im going to college in late august, and i want to get a good gaming laptop... just don't know what route i should go.

I want to be able to run my games without problems
I want to have pretty good support for it, if anything should happen to it

pretty much the only two things i want.

What do you guys suggest? I was looking into something like Dell's XPS laptops, i heard those are fairly decent, but not sure on Dell's support?

Also Alienware is another route, but im also not sure about their support?

What do you guys think / suggest?

1) You will probably get an educational discount, so I would wait to start school and then see what you can get
2) The new Intel processors are coming out in the next week or two, and they are going to be slashing prices. Wait as long as you can before buying

OK so im trying to decide between the

Alienware Auroa m9700

and

Dell XPS M1710

Im leaning more towards the Dell. Ive been reading some reviews on both, and i guess the m1710 is just an amaizing machine. And even though the m9700 has a few new things, the m1710 performs better.

Whats your guys' opinion on the two?

Alienware Aurora m9700 or if you really have the money, the Alienware Aurora mALX. One of the biggest things alienware has over Dell on this box is SLI. Also, wile the XPS is a nice box, Alienware is just a better product. Dell is certainly getting better at the gaming boxes, but alienware still seems to be managed by the same group who are far more experienced with it.

Also keep in mind that Dell is using Intel chips while Alienware is using AMD which for gaming is far better.

But yea your right, i didnt even think about the AMD v Intel chip.... i was talking to some guys who had XPS' today, and they said they absolutely love em. You just need to pretty much whipe all the software in it, and put a new windows in as soon as you get it because the software dell uses are pieces of shit... i have a friend who could help me with that... so thus far the XPS m1710 is on the top of my list.

Also the m9700 is on preorder, so I wouldnt get it unil late this month or august. And im kind of on a time crunch here. I want the laptop a little before i go to college, so i can transfer stuff, and get used to it.

I have owned both Dell and Alienware. I curently have a dell laptop because I wasn't looking for gaming and they would finance it at 0% interest while alienware wouldn't. The was the only reason to pick dell over alienware for me. I have owned 3 dell laptops, 2 of them died on me within 3 years, 1 was a P3 that still ran last I tried it and I used as a server for years. Have owned 2 alienware comps, easily the 2 best I computer I have ever owned.

Another really cool feature of alienware is, you can swap back and forth between the GeForce and onboard vid card. Sounds like something you wouldn't use, but the battery life when running on the onboard vid is considerably better.

Either way, both are solid laptops.

Well that makes a bit more sence. The fact that on paper Dell ownes alienware really doesn't seem to mean much. Alienware doesn't appear to have changed anything. They are using the same hardware and seem to be holding to the same standards as before. Though I would guess the customer service side will be destroyed as Dell executives outsource it, then again, if your buying an Alienware, you either have enough $$ to hire a local tech or you know what your doing and 1st level support wont be userful.

Alienware is way overpriced.

I hate to say it but after shopping around the M1710 is the best gaming laptop for the money.

The only real difference in a laptop that is for gaming versus one that is not is the processor, ram and graphics card.

A good gaming laptop will have an Intel Core Duo (dual core) CPU, 2GB of DDR2 memory and an NVIDIA 7900GTX graphics card.

Right now only Dell, Alienware and Voodoo really offer anything of that caliber.

The M1710 has some HUGE downfalls... One: It's a Dell. Expect SHIT support.

Two: The software that is on it out of the box will slow the machine 15-20 percent.

Three: The M1710's screen has great clarity, but poor color. Its a little washed out. The Sony VAIO AR series has unreal screens, but not a beefy enough graphics card to support gaming.

I would still buy the alienware over the Dell, but for the cost the M1710 is hard to beat.

If you buy one, rebuild the whole thing from the ground up. Put Windows XP Pro on there, AVG Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy, the latest NVIDIA drivers, Direct X, Firefox and Openoffice and ITunes, thats IT. The more software and bullshit you load on there the slower it will run.

And i heard Dell is working on getting much better support, but just a rumor.

Oh, just be aware, that these high end gaming laptops are going to give you really crappy battery life and are going to be REALLY heavy.

The battery life issue is because to get max performance, they actully use some desktop full-power components, rather than lower-power laptop ones.

I looked into this idea a while back, and some of the "gaming" laptops were up at like 10-12 lbs, plus power supply.

google the dell decrapifier, great way to get rid of the million preinstalled software dell installs
or get the $10 reinstall cd and reinstall the os & drivers asap

dell makes a good box as long as your not buying anything under a grand and the xps gaming notebooks are pretty sweet
