had it almost a year, sometimes it dips a bit low on the signal.. but today (during a kurinnaxx fight grrr) it decided to stop working at all.

i dicked with the settings for a while, uninstalled/reinstalled, unplugged/replugged, no luck. tried all 6 USB ports.

took it into the other room where i have a crummy old P3 i'm refurbishing for a friend's daughter-in-law, installed the drivers and plugged it in-- works like a charm.

downloaded the latest drivers and transferred them over to my comp, installed new drivers.. same problem: this device cannot start (code 10).

given identical drivers, why would the same unit work perfectly on one comp and fail to even start on another? what's wrong here, and what can i do about it?

both comps have windows XP professional SP2. this comp's install is about three days old, and the last reformat on the other comp was less than a month ago.

Tried it in more than 1 slot in the PC in which it does not work?

How big is your power supply, and what kinda cards you got in there besides it?


To test in the machine it's not working in:

First try it in a different slot, see if it works there. If it does, you've got a bad slot.

If that fails, try taking out something that would draw power but that isn't 100% vital. Your sound card, maybe. See if it'll start then. If it does, you've either got a power supply issue or you're simply overloading it.

If it doesn't work in either case, I'm really not sure then.

it's USB arlos, and it worked just fine for the past 11 months ;\

no idea why it would suddenly stop working, unless you uninstalled something that seemed unrelated, but had some sort of dependency

as for getting it working again, make sure you install the software before you ever plug the usb dongle in

plugging it in 1st always gave me issues

You may have a direver conflict. Uninstall *ALL* of your drivers forr it or any other network device you may have had. Once they're all gone, then install the new drivers for this thing, plug it in and see. Do try multiple USB ports as well, as the problem could also be with your USB hardware.

okay near as i can tell, the problem ended up being the new motherboard. the USB hardware kind of went berserk. after trying the multitude of things i tried to get it to work right, i sent a detailed email to the manufacturer, including my hardware details, an in-depth dissertation on all the things i tried, and anything else i could think of.


the response i got today: try removing your sound card. maybe that will help.







luckily newegg gave me an RMA for the mobo (the network adapter works fine in other computers) so goodbye shitty board.

moral of the story: don't buy expensive things from companies you never heard of, especially ASRock!

This goes for you and the rest of the board....

I have have tried ASRock, ECS, Abit, MSI and Asus boards in the development and testing of my machines.

Some just OUTRIGHT SUCKED ASS... ASRock being one. I just RMA'd the things as I went through them.

My findings were this: Across the board Asus makes the most reliable boards anywhere. We use them in every system we build.

I recommend upgrading the BIOS before you even install the operating system. Just be careful in a few rare instances, you must load the OS, install the chipset drivers and THEN flash the BIOS.

Brin, let me know what processor you are using and I can recommmend some specific boards.

AMD athlon64 3500+

i picked this board because it had both PCIe and AGP video card slots, so i could still use my geforce fx 5750OC until i could afford a nice PCIe card without having to buy a new mobo. apparently ASRock is kind of known for oddball configurations like that. i guess they're also known for shitty tech support. should've researched it more i guess. ah well.

Go Asus dude. You won't be disappointed. They have boards with both AGP and PCIe.

Or save the money on the board, don't get AGP and get a 35 dollar NVIDIA 6200 card.
