Here's the deal. I need to create a program that will basically manipulate stings and display the results in a graphical representation (not charts and graphs). I was thinking perl + java... would those be the easiest languages to use?

Keep in mind my knowledge of programming is limited to Visual Basic 6.0

Java is the devil and sucks beyond all belief. Perl is about as good a string manipulator as you get though the code is about as ugly as you get.

Can you be a bit more specific about what exactly you’re trying to accomplish?

CPAN can do it, most likely. I could help more, but....it is Diekan 3.0~

vb.net is my fav. The string class in .net is huge.

2nd for perl

it's completely universal/platform independant

you can do anything in perl, and do it in just about anyway you want to

(this can make it difficult for someone else to follow behind you)

Java is trash, Pearl is well known as possibly the best text parsing language there is.. it might be possible to accomplish what you are looking to do in VB however.

Why the h8 for Java? Remember, Java is not the same thing as Javascript, which was originally NetscapeScript, but they changed the name for marketing purposes.

Actual Java you can do way more than just web applets in, it's a full object oriented programming language, and you can do just about anything with it. Hell, the structure and syntax is very very close to C++. The maindifference is in how the compiling and such works.

The .NET framework is a copy of java. I just prefer vs2005 over netbeans.

I argued with 2 of my professors day and night about Java. Java just never ran anything the way we could make it run in other languages. I would pick a perl app over a java app any day. I just have yet to find something that would make me choose to use Java over say PHP, Perl, Python, C++ or C#. To me was little things like Java not supporting ENUM types, sounds small but anyone who has serious C, C++ background probably used them a lot. Java also just doesn’t perform as well as most of the other languages I have used.

Don’t get me wrong, it does have its place. I have my Java, JSP and servlets books right next to the PHP, Python, Perl and C books, I just find I don’t touch them as often as I do the others.

I second VB.net. Our corporate standard was/is Java. As soon there was the slightest crack and .net was made available for use, we dropped Java like a hot potato.

VB.net is part of the Borg but resistance is futile.

Yeah, I guess VB would work. I really can't go into details of the project because of it's for work. But, thanks for the suggestions.
