there's a group of friends in the city here, and we're talking about attempting to record and share recorded tv shows
would the best way to do this just for each of us to have a ftp server and share that way?
or is it possible to use bittorrent, but only share files locally?

Depends how many friends your talking about. You could do it via torrents though you would probably not notice any loss in performance using just ftp.

there's only 5 or 6 of us
i guess what I was thinking was that by doing the p2p thing, you could potentially spread the upload bandwidth usage across 4-5 interfaces, instead of everyone pulling the file off 1 guy (if that makes sense)

I'd say ftp or http. Especially if you all have decent bandwidth.

It is possible to use bittorrent, though the only real secure way to keep others out would be to configure it to use different then standard ports and to firewall out every except those in your group. I guess if yall were really into it, you could setup and internal network across all your servers using VPN and then do your torrents across that internal network.
