the free harddrive is nice, but it doesn't make much sense to spend money on a single core processor anymore

The 7200.9 is a great drive though. The 7200.10 series has the new perpendicular technology, so it's pretty much the hot shit in the hard-drive world right now... but everyone was really excited about the .9s for a long time. It WAS an amazing drive. The fact that newegg is throwing in a very nice drive is what makes this a pretty sweet deal. The FX processor is an enthusiast proc, and only those that are VERY serious about overclocking should ever spend the cash on those chips (like the Extreme edition from Intel). Still... they've come down in price so much that it's still a viable purchase, despite the single core.

if you're just upgrading a current cpu, sure

if you're buying new tho, it'd be retarded

I have the Athlon 64 3000 cpu now, which is why I've been shopping for a new one. I know the FX55 chip isn't incredible or anything, but it does seem like a good deal bundled with that SATA HD, and it would be a tremendous power increase over my 1.8 ghz chip. Maybe I'll just wait for the prices to drop on the dual core cpu's. Decisions, decisions... /sigh

if your board will take a dual core, then by all means go that way

I just stuck a X2 3800+ in my HTPC and it cost me less than the FX you're looking at

you could definately spend the difference and get a dual core for roughly the same price of that FX and be further ahead (depending on what you do with it anyways)

also, did you really need another HDD? if not, it's really not that good of a deal

I don't need a new HD, but that one would be a good replacement for the one I have now. I'll probably end up waiting for the prices to drop on the dual cores.

relative cpu rankings

the fx-55 gives you about a 50% gain on performance

going to the dual core 4600 is like 200%

I didn't see a Manchester chip on that rankings list. I saw Toledo, Clawhammer, and Windsor. Is the Manchester a Windsor?

there's really not a huge amount of difference between them anyway. posted that to mostly jsut give you a relative idea how much difference there is between a pretty good single core, and a pretty good dual core

Keep in mind that the FX series is ONLY meant to be used for the enthusiast... if you aren't going to seriously overclock it, you are spending $100 for features that you'll never use. It's a total waste of money.
