My day today

So i'm doing this job in River Rouge for last 4 days (rebuilding 1920's wood staircase with weerd spindles and shit, to make it look like it was originaly), all carpentry was done night before thanksgiving so today I came in to stain and put first coat of finish. Since it's something that would only take few hours and very clean, i decided that once done i'd swing by my store, so i'm wearing nice clean clothing, and dont have my work van with me. So i'm standing there with brush in my hand when door gets kicked in and cops run inside the house. So they drag me allong with everyone in the house outside, lay me face down into wet grass and cuff me. I tell them that i'm just a contractor working on the house. They take me to the car, ask to see ID, i go in my pocket and I LEFT MY WALLET HOME. So they take me in, cause apparently this house is owned by some drugdealer and there's ton of shit inside, and they think i'm buying something. It takes 6 hours till my wife brings my ID and contract for work to police and i get to go home.

Best part is house is now sealed and i probly wont get paid for work or materials i spent there

Another victory in the war on drugs. How many innocent people have to lose thier lives, money and property before we take another look at this war and decide if we should continue to fight it ?

How long will the guy be in jail? I'm pretty sure you can still hit him up when he gets out.

/agree. If I am not mistaken, no matter what happens, they have to pay off your lein if they go to sell the house. As long as you save proof that he does indeed owe you the money. Check with a lawyer in your state though.

Also, why don't you get paid up front? I'm not telling you how to run your business, just a suggestion. My boss did a side job for a lady and installed some tile. When he was all done and asked for payment, she informed him that the tile doesn't look like the tile in the store, it was a different color. He took her to the store, showed her the tile she picked out, and she still argued that it didn't look the same in her home as it does in the store (can you say common sense?) Anyway, she screwed him on the price of all the thinset, grout, sealer, and his labor. People will do anything to get something for free.

Pay up front for construction work? Hah. Too many hacks out there. Now, paying a set amount like a security deposit I can see.

I'd file a lein, that way when the good old gov't takes possesion of the house and goes to sell it, you'll get paid in escroe (escrow?) of what they sell it for, since it's all profit for them. In most states, anyone can file a lein for anything. It's much harder to get them dropped than to get them filed on property, even if they're baseless, which of course yours isn't.
