He was almost president. I don't think he even ran for office? Wasn't he appointed VP when Nixon was elected and then was president for like a year when Nixon stepped down?

Ford replaced Spiro Agnew as vice president in 1973 when Agnews resigned after he was charged with tax evasion. Ford became president in 1974 after Nixon resigned. He lost the next election to Carter in 1976.

No. He turned down both the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers offers. He went to Yale law school instead.

Yeah but everything else was way cheaper too. A big ass mansion was probably around 200-300k back in the 70's.

A lot of the old time players had to get 2nd jobs in the off-season to make ends meet. That's one reason why training camp was WAY more important then than now. People actually had to use it to get into shape, after an off-season of selling insurance or whatever they were doing. Now, they make so much money they can afford to not do much in the off-season, and thus can continue working out and staying in much much better shape. So, training camps are way less rigorous than they once were.
