what are some decent current multiplayers?
Unreal/quake/BF types need not apply in this case
brothers and I are looking for something we can all play semi casually together that doesn't require a subscription

bit more info, sorry
looking for something that we can mostly play Co-op, and none of us are particularly huge RTS fans
we used to play the shit out of games like Xwing, X vs T, UT, etc
then we switched to MMO (uo, EQ, COH, WoW, etc) but are completely burnt out on the MMO scene
some sort of cool empire building, interactive fighting game would be slick, but I'm not sure such a beast exists

Civilization IV allows you to change the pace of the game to be done in one or two sittings or go on for a couple weeks. Combat is less disjointed than before, instead of just veteran and normal troops you can have very specialized forces for different terrain types, patrols, or siege and support. Having multiple units at a location actually matters instead of the kung-fu; 'attack one at a time' feel. Culture, politics and religion actually matter too, you can basically conquer the world without firing a single shot by building up buffer nations in between your allies, then raising your culture's influence with religion. There's some nice map customization features as well, you can have the veritable waterworld or dune et cetera. Be sure to download the patch as it fixes some pretty nasty game-breaking bugs.
Modded Neverwinter Nights can be fun if you're into that style of combat and progression. But everyone needs the same mods, patches and customization , same with Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale.

i can definitely second Civ 4, it's fun blowing each other up or coordinating against AI's that normally gang bang you
Sword of the Stars is a lot like master of orion, but with real time combat + a 3D galaxy to conquer.
here's the demo, which has multiplayer but limited tech/races. it's the best space 4X game i've ever played.

the
Sword of the Stars Wiki has tons of information, and
here's the forums. there's even a few people that designed the game and work for the company who frequent those forums and answer questions.

hmm, just tried it and it's downloading now. you have to choose a mirror at the bottom of that page. if it still doesn't work you could either wait in fileplanets lines or try searching for it at gamershell.com w/o using the link
