Noob cable question

So i got a new 60" TV - one of the Sony sxrd rear proj ones.
I hooked up my PS2 using composite and the still stuff looked ok but got quite blurry when any action was going on (Madden of course).
I fully expected poor quality out of composite, but here's the noob question....
If you hook a composite up to an input on a AV receiver, and the output to your TV from the receiver is component, does that help the signal at all, aka upconvert anything? Or are you stuck with the worst possible signal running through the pipes.
Disclaimer - I would have already tested this but it's a pain to pull my receiver out to try it.

you can never really actually improve the source material, but the receiver may do a better job of cleaning up the noise on the signal

Why don't you use a different cable? Your TV probably takes HDMI, Component, or at least S-Video.

I'll have to go pick up the s-video one to try that. Will report back my findings! I didn't realize the cable was available. I didn't see the round hole on the back of the console for the S-video hook up so figured I had a first gen ps2 that didn't support it or something.

Rear projection TV's kinda have delay with video games on normal av output channels. Is there a dedicated game channel?

there's a proprietary PS2 cable that has the normal composite, as well as an Svideo cable
cost me like $20 last year

I got the PS2 component cable on the way home from work and it makes a significant difference. It's still not crystal clear sharp though.
God of War looked great (enabled progressive scan + widescreen in the game options), but I'm still far from impressed by Madden07. The players uniforms really have a "bleeding" effect to them.

Your TV needs calibration. Rear projection CRTs can be dialed in to be AMAZING but it takes work or $$$ to get someone to do it for you. Buy yourself a home theater calibration disk and go through the basic setup. For a better picture than you probably thought possible on your TV, get a pro to do it from the serviceman menu. I spent about 2 weeks calibrating my 47" Panasonic HD CRT and the difference was stunning.
