Personally I think Blu Ray is gonna be the new standard. It's availiable with PS3, it can support up to 200gb, looks and sounds phenominal and Gizmodo is already claiming it to be the winner. Any opinion?

The porn industry has already chosen HD-DVD as the standard. Game over.

HDDVD will become a shortlived standard but will never have the market share that DVD's currently have. In less than 10 years a new standard will be decided and everyone will be more likely to ditch their current DVD collection in favor of it.

No BluRay is the Beta of DVD's. Sony trying to push proprietary shit on people just like Beta, minidisk, memory stick etc. Fuck them.

Who cares as long as players come out that support both formats.

If I had to choose right now I'd go BluRay just because I have a PS3 on the radar for a near-future purchase.

The last option is an inevitability. Obviously technology won't stop just because HD-DVD becomes the new standard.

Why HD-DVD you ask. It will have nothing to do with technology at all IMHO. It will win over blue-ray because of marketing and the perception of "enchanced" dvd.

You may not agree but I honestly believe this is a MAJOR blow to Blu-Ray and it's already questionable future is looking much more bleak. Sorry dude. Sony will not sell near enough PS3's to get enough market share to keep movie houses producing many titles for both formats.

Sony has owned the industry for the past 11 years and will continue to own it (the gaming industry). 1 out of every 3 households in America has a ps2 and porn is much more easily accessible on the internet. HD movies aren't. Blu Ray has better titles. You have to pay an extra 200 to get an HD DVD attachment for your xbox to utilize HD DVD. Blu Ray is affordable. You can get a Blu Ray player from Amazon for 400. Amazon also has Blu Ray half off and Target has Blu Ray at like 20 bucks a shot. The technology is better. Everything about Blu Ray is better than HD DVD.

None of that matters.

Sony may certainly win the "console war" but that will not determine the winner of the video format war.

Why do we need a winner? Given the size of the market, what's wrong with having multiple formats?

Hopefully in the near future players will play both on most brand name DVD players.

Can either of them play original format DVDs? If one can, and one can't, that'll be the deciding factor.

Because the average consumer fears their $600 purchase might go the way of Beta and will end up not buying either and sticking with their trusty DVD players.

There is already hardware available to play both types. Yes iirc they both play prior DVD formats.

The decision IMHO will not be technical, sony is losing money and market regardless of the PS2. The PS3 has bombed, the console war (as Toss said) won't decide the home entertainment war.

As much as I dislike MS, the media center product they have will most likely be most popular for its "ease of use" and that hardware will most likely integrate better for HD-DVD (since this is MS's preferred format).

Sony has failed at marketing and for those that were around when beta was being taunted as "the best", it didn't matter in the end. If you don't know what "beta" is/was, then your kids won't know what blue-ray is/was

Option 4 should be removed as this is an inevitability(sp). blue-ray or hd-dvd won't stop storage requirements be it data, video, audio, etc.

There is already technology on-going that will hold terabytes of data it just isn't something that is reasonably priced or consumer available.

And when did the ps3 bomb? You guys forget that ps1 sold maybe 5000 units it's opening week and went on to become the most successful system ever created. Also, Blu Ray's are selling. Casino Royale Blu Ray is top 10 on amazon atm. Blu Ray's in general are outselling HD DVD's. PS3 will be in as many homes as ps2. Everyone who wille ventually have a ps3 has a blu ray player and with the prices of HD TV's at what they are HD in many homes is a huge possibility. Sony isn't stupid. Of course they are losing money. That kinda happens when you sell a system for 600 that cost you 830 to make. They will make it back in due time.

There ain't no WAY that ps3 will have the market ps2's have. PS2 out sold ALL other consoles combined in '06. PS3 are bombing because no one is buying them. They have pulled the ps2 backward support from the ps3 in EU, they are damn near dropping support because of all the problems ps3 have with ps2 games. The only reason IMHO that someone would by a ps3 over a wii or xbox360 is because of the ps2 backward compatibility.

I don't have the details but I'd bet the folks buying blue-ray's are buying them because sony won't allow a port to HD-DVD (I haven't a clue, just throwing this out there).

In reality I suspect, as lyion mentioned, there probably won't be a win / lose but hardware will allow both, you can buy drives today that do both.

What "video media mogule" company is backing HD-DVD? I am not sure there is one, that can't be said of blue-ray. That doesn't mean blue-ray will win.

HD-DVD will "win" IMHO because this will be the media of choice to record HD-DVD from your comcast, wow, tivo, etc to your computer. While the market of purchaseable video content at the moment is blue-ray.

Sony will pull through. They have enough exclusive titles backing them in order to do so. That's what wins the console war. Titles. What does 360 have? Yet another FPS the same as the last one. Wii? A bunch of gimicky games + Zelda. The third party game devs have not warmed up to Nintendo since N64. Sony is it and will continue to be although I'm not sure how ps4 will do but I still think ps3 will reign supreme.

Bomb in the sense that it did not meet any projected sales, continues to undersell vs it's pre-model PS3 vs PS2), current competeing consoles outsell it and continue to do so. I would call that bombing.

Yes I agree, just not on PS3. They will port do whatever they have to in order to sell a title but the PS3 is a POS

Do these discs (HDDVD / BLURAY) fill up your screen on normal mode if you have a widescreen TV or do they STILL have the black bars at the top and bottom?
