The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was thrown open Saturday -- you could say it was the first time in 4,000 years -- drawing a crowd of curious pilgrims and townsfolk to behold the wonder.

Of course, it's only a replica of the biblical Ark, built by Dutch creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.

Reckoning by the old biblical measurements, Johan's fully functional ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.

Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold.

Amazing that they fit 2 of each of the estimated 10 million or so different species on such a small boat and kept them all fed and contained for 40 days and nights.

Actually, supposedly the Ark floated around for over a year. It only RAINED for 40 days and nights.

Still, we've already gone over this, though. The 2 clinchers for me are 1) The volume of water necessary is many times the volume of all of the water that has ever existed on the planet, and 2) With that much water, there would be so much moisture in the air (ie, humidity) that you would literally drown breathing it.

Both of those are incontrovertable scientific facts that completely dispel any chance the literal story of Noah is true.

That said, I DO believe there was SOME kind of overwhelming flood in the near east in pre-history. There are too many other stories from that region, including the Epic of Gilgamesh, that mention a massive flood to doubt that SOMETHING happened over there. The story of Noah is a derivative from the epic of Gilgamesh. Also, do not take the flooding of the world literally. Back then, the world to them was as far as the horizon. Since there was no true measurment of recording time/day/year. One year could have been one season.

Considering they lived in the middleast, near Iraq, try finding out what type of animals lived in that vicinity and see if they can all fit in a boat 5x the size that is pictured in that link above, with enough food and water to last aprox 90-120 days. It's all possible.

Lets not forget, the big fish theory also. Noah could have been in a rowboat with his dog and wife during a Noreaster type storm for a few days. And as all legends go, they grow to exageration.
