I always thought Warhammer was a D&D based army vs. army game. Does it in fact have nothing to do with the D&D realm / lore?

Absolutely nothing whatsoever, it is entirely its own lore and world that has existed for almost as long as D&D has, going back to the early/mid-80s. Has nothing whatsoever to do with D&D other than both deal with fantasy worlds. (Well, Warhammer has the Warhammer 40k franchise too, which is sci fi)

It is, however, as you said; an army vs. army miniatures game for the most part, though Games Workshop, the company that makes Warhammer, has published rules for a pen & paper fantasy role playing system akin to D&D (though obviously with totally different rules) set in the Warhammer world. How much of the MMO is based on their FRP product I have no idea, though.

I really wish that Warhammer was going to be 40k vs Fantasy. 40k's lore is much much cooler.

Yeah, but the problem with 40k is that NONE of the factions would ever work together, with the possible exception of IG and Space Marines. At least in Fantasy, you could potentially see elves and humans or humans and dwarves working together, etc. You don't see, say, Ultramarines working with Eldar much at all in 40k. The general power level of all the base troops that they're using is reasonably close too, though I'm not sure how they're going to balance a chaos character vs an empire one, really. 40k, how much better than your average IG is a Space Marine? How would you balance FW Tau vs Crisis suit Tau? etc. etc. etc.

I mean, it's possiblel we'd see some sort of 40k MMO in the future, but I wouldn't count on it, if for no other reason than how much ALL sides are supposed to hate each other.

They'd have to devise a new race or faction that would cause a shift in power to bring about change.

I personally played the Eldar.

Never played 40k. If I did, I'd probably play mech Tau or Tyranids. Never cared for the whole "ELVES IN SPAAAAACE" thing for the Eldar, never liked Orks much, IG doesn't even remotely appeal, and everyone and their brother play Space Marines, chaos or otherwise.

I was a Eldar player myself, I liked them in 2nd Edition because of how specialized you could make the Exarchs. And the Wraithguard, were actually worth putting in your army cause of how bad ass they were.
