I have a friend who is trying to make sense of this quote.
By John Calvin - "To know what constitutes theft requires a positive alternative."
that's what he gave me, anyone have an idea of what it means....

To determine whether theft is in fact theft it needs to be compared to the possible alternative actions that person could've took to meet his desired goal(s).
or
To be able to discern "theft" you would need a positive example of theft to compare it against.

Maybe I'm simplistically missing something, but wouldn't buying an item be a positive alternative.
Or, to simplify it more.. You can steal a twinkie.. You can't steal air...

yeah, umm, wasn't saying the answer wasn't correct, was entertaining it within the conversation my friend was having, and it is actually within the context of a larger chapter and text that I am going to read in the next few days.
so, yeah, i think it is right, though i am not sure what the author meant until i read the whole text.
