New Laptop

So, basically my brother wants a laptop that he can use with wireless internet. Mostly for sitting in his recliner during football games, and looking up stuff on his fantasy teams. He isn't a gamer unless you count Poker online.
Anyway...he is looking between these two..

They are both Gateway, which I cringed when I heard.
I also need to buy a router with wireless capabilities and a wireless card for the laptop? Is this correct? ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hugely overpriced. You can get a good non gaming laptop for 400 bucks.

the current toshiba laptops are fantastic fwiw
at work we're tossing out all the ibm/lenovo's and making a full change to toshiba (that's probably 500+ laptops)

trendnet's aren't great
pick up a linksys wrt54GL
and yes, you can network pretty much any computer with any laptop as long as they have network cards(wired or wireless or any combination of the 2)

I swear by the linksys's, but that Router is fine for a home.
Given the one you listed costs 3 bucks, I'd go ahead and get it. It should do everything you want it to.

FYI: Acer is in the process of buying Gateway. So the services and supports may be affected during the takeover.

So, the brothers roommate is lettin ghim use one to see if he really needs it. He goes to turn on the new laptop, and it powers up but the screen is black. Any suggestions?

Kiz most new laptops have internal wireless nics. If it does not most likely you got a refurb.

My brother and I are roommates, he has a friend in town for a while staying. His mother gave him the laptop and said. Here I cant get it to work, if you can get it to work, you can have it. Thats all the info I have.

Hook an external monitor up to it and see if it's actually booting.

is it actually booting up?
you might have to cycle thru it's monitor modes (usually function key + f4)

ok tried that, no luck, and also tried fn f7, since that was the monitor button. Any other suggestions?

i'm not sure
i've never had a laptop not display something initially during boot up
seems weird that it wouldn't display to an external monitor either

I dl'ed the handbook, nothing there helped. I'm gonna have to call tech support.
