$500 for a blu-ray player isn't actually all that bad

Except they are $600 once the existing stock is sold AND you can get a really nice HD-DVD player for $200.

Because HD-DVD is the lesser format and will ultimately lose the war.

Having watched a lot of both formats, Blu-ray is by far the better of the two.

sony owns like 45% of all movies ever made

it's going to be hard for them to lose

Seriously, there is NO WAY Sony is going to put HD-DVD out of the game. The only people watching Blu-Ray movies are the people who bought PS3's of which there are very few. There is no way Sony is going to sell enough PS3's to make Blu-Ray any kind of standard. HD-DVD has some megaton bombs they will be dropping very soon that there is no way Blu-Ray can compete with. HD-DVD will be the standard to replace DVD's and Blu-Ray will remain a niche market like UMD's are today. The "war" is still in it's infancy and Toshiba has yet to even start fighting. All they have to do at this point is wait a while longer until the demand for HD content is higher and then work with existing studios to start manufacturing more HD-DVD/SD combo disks and phase out the current SD disks and it's game over. If a consumer can buy a disk that will play in their current DVD players AND contains the HD version for when they buy a new (sub $200) player and it costs the same amount of money as a regular DVD, there will be no more "war". Blu-Ray cannot compete in that market. Everyone but Sony is taking it in the ass right now because standalone Blu-Ray players by Pioneer, etc are NOT selling and Sony's promises to Blu-Ray supporting studios of selling 10-15 million PS3' this year is NOT happening. Besides the Paramount/Dreamworks announcement to go HD-DVD exclusive along with Universal, expect Warner to make a similar announcement soon.

Not bundling an HD DVD drive with the 360 was an idiot move by MS.

Bundling Bluray with the PS3, which most of Japan and many gamers worldwide will eventually buy was smart.

Bluray right now is winning the format war, despite MS throwing money at it.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/08/29/business/ce.php

Wolfgang Schlichting, an analyst in Miami covering the optical disc drive market for International Data Corp., said Blu-ray players held a commanding lead over HD DVD primarily because of the success of Sony's PlayStation 3. In stand-alone players, HD DVD, whose players are made by Toshiba, has a slight edge over Blu-ray, Schlichting said.

According to the Digital Entertainment Group, which promotes the Blu-ray format, there are roughly 1.5 million Blu-ray players, including Sony's PlayStation 3, in the U.S. market versus about 300,000 using HD DVD, including Microsoft's Xbox 360 device.

This is just in the US. Asia, with many, many more gamers has an even more commanding lead.

HD DVD is losing this war heavily, and the gap is widening.

MS has also stated that they have no plans to ever make HD games playable on that HD drive of theirs. Great job, MS!! Keep churning out those 3 disc games like Blue Dragon.

Also, Japan's porn industry has chosen blu-ray for what it's worth.

:dunno:

PS3 needs to get it's thumb out of its ass as far as good games go. I can't understand what the fuck they're waiting for.

It's not PS3's problem, it's the developers. It will even out within a year, guaranteed.

Yes, I own an HD DVD player.

The HD format war is NOT going to be won by game consoles. Neither the PS3 or the Xbox360 are going to have any impact on the format in the long run because neither of them are going to sell enough units to have anywhere near the market penetration of DVD. Right now the market share for HD media is less than 1% of the home video market. Noone gives a shit about HD media right now so claiming Blu-Ray or HD-DVD are "winning" anything is bullshit at this point because there is nothing to win yet. Out of the 2 million PS3's sold, less than 40% of the owners even know what the fuck Blu-Ray is and out of the less than 40% that do, only 1/2 of them have actually bought movies for their PS3's. Every HD-DVD player that is sold is sold for the sole purpose of playing movies on and there have been WAY more than 300K HD-DVD players sold btw.

HD-DVD doesn't give a shit about Blu-Ray because that's not who they are at "war" with. HD-DVD has their sights set on the DVD market. Studios are getting irritated with Sony and their typical hype and bullshit and are going to go where the money is in the long run and that's HD-DVD. The Blu-Ray spec is STILL NOT COMPLETE YET and they have been selling players for a year now. ALL of the stand alone Blu-Ray players are going to be rendered obsolete this fall when the spec is finalized. The PS3 should be able to be updated via the web but like I said, the PS3 is inarguably NOT the success Sony was hoping for and will never sell enough units to carry the format. The sweet spot is the sub $200 player market and HD-DVD is already there. Once the cheaper players start showing up in places like Walmart, Joe Blow is going to decide which format "wins", not the early adopters like myself and all the PS3 owners.

By the end of 2008 it will be more clear who is going to "win" but when you are talking about major titles selling less than 100K units on BOTH sides of the "war" combined, saying Blu-Ray is winning because they are selling 66K copies while HD-DVD is only selling 33K when there are supposedly 5-6 times as many Blu-Ray players sold is hardly anything to brag about. Any claim that either format is winning anything right now is all media hype, don't buy it.

No, I have no stock in MS and have as much contempt for the company as any other person in the IT industry, I just REALLY like quality audio and video and don't want to have to buy a $600 piece of overhyped shit ala the PS3 and buy ANOTHER proprietary Sony media in order to enjoy it.

Oh and Harrison. once again you are full of SHIT about another subject. The HD experience is nearly identical, and arguably in favor of HD-DVD right now and has been since both formats were released. If you'd like to argue the pros and cons of each format, I'd be happy to discuss them with you because I sure know a FUCK of a lot more about the subject than you do, as usual.

If that is true, isn't it impossible for that to always be the case because of the size of each disk? Blu-Ray crushes them in that regard. More data=more detail eventually right?

The more space issue is all hype. Most Blu-Ray disks are 25GB because the manufacturing yield is so low on the BD50 disks and the average HD release comes in at around 18GB so why use a 50GB disk? There are only a handful of BD releases that use more than 25GB. 99.9% of all BD releases would fit on a standard HD30 disk right now and as compression techniques become more efficient and when Toshiba rolls out the HD51 disk, the size limitations will be a null issue. Take the King Kong HD-DVD release for example, it's one of the largest HD releases to date. 201 minute high quality transfer with extras and several high quality audio mixes to choose from and the disk size is still 27.45GB. The manufacturing process is so cheap on the HD-DVD side, another disk can always be included in a release ala DVD without adding a significant cost to the studio if it was ever needed.

that's a bit of a misnomer

there's more space on blu-ray, but it really only helps for crazy lengths of video, not more resolution

again, i don't think Ps3 or 360 will be the difference maker, but rather that sony owns 40-45% of ALL source material

that's the part you keep conveniently ignoring Toss

No, they don't and even if they did, they will eventually make HD-DVD's if they want to make money from their catalog. Blu-Ray will be around for as long as the PS3 will but it will never be more than a niche market.

My prediction:

By xmas 2008, similarly priced "combo" HD/SD-DVD's will be replacing standard definition DVD's for most major releases with a pro HD studio behind them (ie Universal, Warner, Paramount, Dreamworks, Weinstein. etc) HD-DVD players will have dropped to $149 or possibly even $99 and will be widely available at all major US retailers. The combo format will allow existing HD and standard DVD owners to buy one disk for use in all of their current DVD players (ie, their laptop, car DVD, bedroom, etc) which Blu-Ray is unable to do and is probably HD-DVD
s biggest advantage. HD players and media will finally start to catch on in the public and the inexpensive HD players will fly off the shelves for xmas taking a much larger percentage of the market and convincing all other studios that are on the fence or BR exclusive to start releasing HD-DVD movies. By Xmas 09', HD will have enough momentum to to officially be declared the "winner".

Blu-Ray isn't going anywhere soon but Sony's business plan is fatally flawed. They are losing something like $200 on every PS3 they are selling and the Blu-Ray movie/game attach rate is abysmal. They are losing their asses on the console and not making any money on the software/movie side. Putting a Blu-Ray player in each PS3 was a bad idea and trying to push a new format on the public will likely cost Sony a massive amount of money. If the console had debuted $200 cheaper but with a standard DVD drive, it would have been game over for both Nintendo and Microsoft this round.

yes they do

According to International Herald Tribune one of the main reasons for Sony's recent purchase of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) for about $ 5 billion is to assure the success of the Blu-ray Disc format. Content support from Hollywood will likely be crucial in the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD format fight and with the buy of MGM Sony gets a catalog of about 4100 movie titles including the James Bond franchise. This makes Sony the owner of the world's largest film library with about 7600 titles or about 40 % of all movies ever produced in Hollywood.
