ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The body of a 41-year-old man was found in a wooded area next to a guillotine he built and used to kill himself, police said. The man, from the Detroit suburb of Melvindale, was discovered Monday by workers from a shopping center near his home.

Allen Park Deputy Police Chief Dale Covert said the roughly six-foot tall guillotine was bolted to a tree and included a swing arm. Covert said police also found several store receipts detailing the materials used to assemble the device.

"I can't even tell you how long it must have taken him to construct," he said. "This man obviously was very determined to end his life."

how terrible, also how dumb. there are much easier ways to kill yourself - I'd reckon it's not just a desire to kill himself rather than a desire to go out with a bang and grab as much attention as possible while doing it.

I dunno, it's probably the least painful, and hardest to fuck up method to end yourself

plus you can save money and get a shorter coffin

the least painful is a prescription medication cocktail with sleeping pills as one of the bottles you take or carbon monoxide poisoning. both are tremendously successful and hard to fuck up if you actually want to die and arent' stupid enough to do it when there's any chance of someone finding you in time.

Actually, the guillotine was designed as a humane execution method. Previously, people got executed by having their heads chopped off, which was a brutal and messy affair, as sometimes it took several swings of the headsman's axe, as it usually wouldn't cut all the way through the first time, and it's hard to hit the same point twice in a row with a huge heavy axe.

The Guillotine, however, was a very large, very heavy, very sharp blade that was positioned to slice right between vertebrae, and the angle of the blade ensured that it sliced cleanly, rather than chopping. Actually, there were some recorded incidents of the stroke being so fast, that when the heads were picked up from the basket, the head still demonstrated signs of life, ie blinking, moving the mouth as if trying to talk, etc. All that stopped within 10-15 seconds, of course.

Anyway, all that said, this guy must have been a) seriously determined, and b) DID want to make a splash in going out.

Oh I'm not debating it was fairly painless, but building it alone is making it much more difficult to kill yourself than need be. The other 2 methods I mentioned are much simpler to partake in (the monoxide poisoning being the obvious more difficult of the two) and create such a delirium that even if you're to survive - which you won't, provided you do it when no one is around - you won't remember a lick of it, and you don't feel pain.

I would wager that 'determined' would mean doing it as quickly as possible, which is definitely not the case when constructing your own guillotine. To me, the whole point of this suicide was to grab media attention, or attention of those contributing to his desire to end his life - and he was quite successful in doing so.

While what you say is true you should also know that the blade would become blunt after several rolling heads. If I recall some of my history, even the Guillotine at times took 2+ blows to finally separate head from torso.

well, when you're chopping a dozen royalty per day and don't take the time to resharpen, of course shit like that's going to happen

it doesn't really change anything that Arlos said

Yeah, I know, I didn't disagree with him. I was just making the point that even the Guillotine had its flaws LOL
