I have been looking at dvd players that (claim) to upconvert the DVD signal to 720p,1080i and 1080p.

You can pick one up for like $150. Is it worth it? Will there be a big difference in picture quality versus a normal DVD player?

I have a 46" Sharp Aquos that can broadcast up to 1080p.

for $75 more, buy an HD-DVD player. Do some research on a few of the Toshiba models. Not only will they upconvert your standand DVD's beautifully but some of them can even do 24fps if your TV can support it. That means there is no 3:2 pull down effect as the player is able to pull the movie off of the media at the same framerate it was filmed at. Your display has to support a refresh rate that is a multiple of 24 to take advantage of this feature. You can burn HD material on to standard DVD's for playback as well (approx 40 minutes of HD material fits on a standard DVD "PORN WHAT?"). The fact that they also play HD-DVD's isn't too bad either.


HD-DVD's will look amazing on your 46" 1080P display.

The whole reason I want an upconverting DVD player is because I don't want to commit to one of the two HD-DVD formats until we know which one will "win".

Toss, didn't you mention the 360 upconverts? I don't watch movies with mine, but I think Ginz has one or planned to get one.

Ginz, upconverting is a roll of the dice. Some DVDs look nice, others it actually looks worse.

The 360 upconverts, yeah but with no HDMI output it will only upconvert via VGA output unless you have the Elite. I am also not a fan of using the built in drive on a console to play movies as it adds serious wear and tear and shortens the life of the console.

Ginz, even if blu-ray "wins", your HD-DVD's will still look great in your player and it still plays all your SD-DVD's as well. Win.

Buying an upconverting DVD player at this point is dumb when you can get an HD player for not much more money.
