I like the idea of an HD projector, but to be honest I didn't realise they were that expensive, even the refurbed ones.
Do you own one Toss?

900 bucks is dirt cheap for a 720p projector

Friend of mine has a 1080p projector. I don't even want to think about how much that cost him.

I own a Sony Cineza VPL-HS51a. It's a 720p projector but is based on LCD instead of DLP. I paid quite a bit more for it than the one that's selling on WOOT. That's a SWEET price for a nice HD projector. 1080p ones are still in the $3000 range I think which seems like a ridiculous amount to pay for marginally better picture quality.

I'd worry about the crisp quality of a projected image. I suppose for 3000$ the quality must be good.

When properly calibrated I think the image quality from my projector rivals anything I've seen on LCD or even Plasma TV's of any size. The fact that the image is 9ft across more than makes up for any small differences in picture quality. You do need a light controlled room though for the best day viewing quality.

This is the friend with the PS3 that he uses for Blu-Ray movies. Seeing the hi-def versions of Planet Earth displayed across a huge chunk of entire wall, still in incredibly crisp resolution... Well, lets just say it's pretty damn stunning. My friend is really looking forward to the new HD version of Gran Turismo to play on that setup, it's gonna be awesome.

The only thing better than HD movies on an HD projector is HD porn on an HD projector.

decent price on the projector but notice it's a $300 rebate. Also notice that the lamp life is something like 1500 hours. That's pretty bad. You'll be spending about $400 a year on lamps. My lamp life is 3000 hours give or take and my projector came with an extra bulb so I am set til 2010 or so.

I built a 1080p projector a while ago that takes $9 bulbs
total hack/kludge, it was uglier than shit and huge, but the picture was awesome
I think it cost about $100 to build, sold it to some dude for 900, heh

An HD projector seems like an interesting item, though I just cant see a good way to use it in a home setting. Maybe I am just not creative enough. Not to mention how ugly it could be running the cables.
What would you need for distance in general for a projector to give you the equivalent of a say 50" TV screen.

you pretty much need access to the ceiling to make a projector install look good

I sit 14 ft away from 109" screen which is around the optimal distance.
