What do you all think is a good xmas gift for my girlfriend who've I've been with for 4 months?

I was thinking some type of jewelry like necklace or something. I don't want to spend over 400.

I'd retract the jewelry idea and like mart said lower it to $100. My parents don't even spend $400 on me...jebus!

I always found that a nice 1st christmas present was some basic earrings

you can pick up (usually) nice ones for 100ish bucks. unless she hates earrings for some reason, it's a pretty much foolproof gift for a girlfriend

$400 is a pretty hefty tag for someone you've only been with 4 months, except maybe in the case of someone you've known for a really long time and are very close with and plan on a lasting relationship with.

that said, you could go the generic route (anything anyone tells you on here) or you can go the thoughtful route and spend enough time listening to stuff she says in passing to get an awesome idea.

if you're willing to spend 400 bucks on her, surely she's worth not putting some huge pricetag on it and getting her something you actually put some thought into.

I've never been a fan of commercialized crap thats advertised on tv as 'if you really love her, get her this' - it's almost insulting to me, really, but I think that's a personal preference. there are tons of people who will say the same i do and the same amount who would prefer overzealous spending.

Bottom line is, you've got to know your girl to know what you're going to get her. Even at 4 months, you'll know the difference between if she prefers cliche or unique.

Give her a pearl necklace and then for her birthday, get her a matching set of earrings. If she complains, tell her you'll nut right in her eyes next time.

Really, what you buy her should depend on how things are going and if you want them to advance

An under 100 dollar gift for someone you are seeing seriously is pretty cheesy, but again different people, different standards.

or maybe you want that nice of a gift too.... then stick with the 400

exchanging expensive gifts for xmas is ridiculous IMO. I buy something nice for my son and my GF and I usually buy something together that we need or don't buy much of anything for each other, maybe a DVD or something.

First one. It's beautiful.

Just to give you another girl's point of view, I would be incredibly uncomfortable receiving that level of jewelry from a boyfriend of only 4 months. That is something better saved for further in your relationship.

The earring suggestion was good - maybe pearl or something. Or maybe a nice watch.

Diamonds are far too excessive.

Another option would be to treat her to a weekend away somewhere. You are in FL - maybe the Biltmore Estate in NC? Something that requires some traveling so it feels like a "trip", but isn't a huge ordeal. Plus the Biltmore is very beautiful and should be impressive. A romantic weekend away would probably make her much less uncomfortable an an expensive gift of jewelry.

If she digs games and you're dead set on shelling out 400$ ish, get her a wii or xbox or ps3 or DS/PSP (+ games) or whatever she doesn't have. Hella better than some shiny rocks that she'll stop wearing in a few years at best.

my initial thought was if you're spending this much at 4 months, you better prepare to spend 100k on the engagement ring

i agree, that's the one i'd want to receive.

but still, that is a lot of damn money. yeesh. i got josh a new monitor this year for $200 (from Best Buy's black friday sale, woot) and a sweatshirt, and we've been together for 2.5 years. $400 is just wacky for four months. shoot, our first christmas i think i spent $80 on him and he did the same.
