Where they're surfing is a area called Mavericks off of Half Moon Bay, where the waves get as big as they do at pretty much any of the big-wave spots in Hawaii. The difference is, it's Northern California, and the water is freezing cold, and those waves don't end up on a nice beach, they spit you into jagged rocks. More than 1 person has died surfing that spot, including at least one big-name Hawaiian big-wave surfer.

Supposedly the day that was filmed was the biggest waves ever ridden at Mavericks; those faces you see in the video are up to 60-70 feet high. (Surfing 60-70 foot waves, my gods.) I was about 2 miles away when this was going on (December 4th of this year), but it was so foggy and rainy, you couldn't see shit from the shore, or I probably would've gone and tried to watch.

Funny part is they have pushed back the dates for the mavricks contest for this year because of the lack of big consistent waves. I went a little south of there about a month ago and the 4 -5 waves were giving me a good minute long ride. I felt like I had my ass kicked for the next 4 days after haha. would take me about 30 min to get past the break for the most part.

I still have never been surfing. Maybe I'll see if I can take some lessons while I'm in Hawaii. Unfortunately, I'm gonna be on the big island, and there's no beaches worth mentioning where we're gonna be staying.

Sounds exactly like me, a lot of my friends surf, I went out and stood up for about a second till I bailed and the board fin smacked me in the back of the head...i was heading up the beach 5 mins later

The training that they do for those big waves are crazy, holding large rocks beneath the ocean to work on their breathing, you have to be able to hold your breath for up to 3 mins to ride those, when you go under you go wayyy under
