Sometimes watches are more personal jewelry than they are timepieces. Also, at certain levels of business, etc, having something of a certain quality is necessary in order to not look out of place. Just like you won't see a VP of a major corporation going to a client meeting in a leisure suit from K-Mart, you likewise won't see one in a 9 dollar plastic Swatch, either.

Also, frequently watches of sufficient quality can be passed down family lines, like other jewelry. For example, my father has a Rolex that is made out of 18k gold, heavy as hell, that was handed down from my grandfather. Due to its age and materials, it's probably worth $15000 by now, but we'd never sell it. Eventually, I'll get it from my father, and someday, should I ever end up having a son, he'll get it. If I don't, my brother's son will.

well, in all reality - a watch of that caliber is an investment, because just like Arlos's family heirloom, it'll appreciate in value down the road

I'm not a fan of the paris hiltons of the world who waste money that's handed to them as I grew up poor as shit and have to work for every penny I have, but if you've earned it to spend, I don't see anything wrong with spending it on something like that. A sweater is a bit different, that's more like a car. .depreciates as soon as it's in your hands. Like art for example.. I just can't share the passion of people who spend a million bucks on a painting that looks similar to something I finger painted when I was 3, but it appreciates in value - you enjoy it while you have it, and then later in life if you want to sell it for retirement money, you do.

The camo watch thing was more of an example kind of. Im not saying everyone should go out and buy a 7 dollar watch for gods sake dear. I meant more that theres BOUND to be better things to put money in than stuff like that. And thats probably why I may not make as much as some people, but I still have a nicer vehicle that a lot I know, etc. I guess it smore of a matter of opinion of what people hold important. I get what you're saying Gaazy - but I think it's because we're *not* in that income bracket. To me, spending $70,000 on a car is incredulous, and a huge waste of money on something completely unnecessary. I could think of soooooo many other things to do with that amount of money. Same with a 20k watch - my $100 watch has been serving me wonderfully for the last 7 years or so. But if I raked in multimillion dollars every year as income, dropping 20k on a watch wouldn't seem as ridiculous anymore. It's a completely different mentality, that I just don't have.

Might be the areas you guys live in too that I didnt think about before. Different cultures altogether. I know a lot of people through work that are worth millions that dont buy stupid shit like that. My 2nd cousin owns coal mines, and along with his investments in oil and gas and god knows what else, is worth into the billions. The last company he built and sold with the mines he got something like 300 mil for it. He has some pretty damn nice toys, but he still drives a F-150 hes had for years. If you talked to him and didnt know who he was, you wouldnt know hes worth a dime. Thats the kind of people I like, not the ones who think theyve got to spend the money to let the whole world know theyve got money, because I personally dont give two shits how much someone makes, it doesnt affect me.

theres a guy around here named Buck Harless whos retired and out of the business now, but hes been huge in coal and loggin and stuff for many many years. Everyone acts all worshippy and stuff to him because hes worth so much, when everyone knows hes just a huge fucking asshole. I might be one of the only people in a while he's got a good solid "fuck off" from because everyone else sucks up to him. He's a big supporter of our high school football team, and one time I found a spot right by the entrance last year and as I was getting out of the truck he pulls in behind me and says somethin like "Move, thats my spot" (which after talking to people he's been known to act like that before if doesnt get that spot), so I told him to get their earlier and kiss my ass. Was nice to see the stunned look on his face that someone would stand up to him~ Just a bully.

New Rolexes are rated now above swiss watches but you're not buying a Rolex if you're just buying a watch. You're buying, like Arlos said, a timepiece. It's not everyday you get to buy something you will have for the rest of your life and even beyond that. Also, it benefits me professionally since where I live and work, image is more important than anything. I don't think you're a yuppie assclown if you buy a Rolex. If you can afford one and you have good taste, it's certainly an investment and an appreciating one at that. Also, if you knew the meticulous detail that gets put into a Rolex you'd know they're virtually indestructable.
