Purchase TF2 and COD, and start playing on WOW and EQ Emu servers.

You'll save a lot of coin, always have something to do, and have fun.

Eve is fun at first. It quickly lost its luster for me.

I highly recommend Shards of Dalaya

http://www.shardsofdalaya.com

Eq the way it was meant to be. A few people here play it also.

SoD is fun, but once again, I still dont agree that it is better than old EQ. I especially dont like what theyve done to some of the zones and a couple other little things, but nonetheless, its still fun to dick around with a few nights a week. Im gonna start toying with it again when I get back from my trip this week now that everything in life is slowin back down other than work. Naethyn sucks on SoD cock harder than they do ron Pauls~

SoD is a fool's fortress. i wanna play that original eq emu. do you have to run for your corpse and can people loot your shit if you consent them? i also want to race for a timed spawn. bad

i want competition. not convenience

and some guy from work tries to convince me to play WoW every day. i see a good amount when i hang out after work but i don't think it's enough to convince me to pay for it. the PvP looks fun tho

do any of you guys play diablo 2? or titan quest or crysis or something?

Thats one super gay thing about SoD. No good ole CRs like the old days. And no exp loss, its just a little percentage thing you have to pay back before you can gain more exp (which if you are soloin, it takes like 5 kills to pay that back). So theres really no real motivation to keep from diein. It can be made back up in like 15 minutes, unlike way back when when it could take a whol enight making up what you lost. Kinda gay, I liked it the old way

I didn't like it the old way, always got frustrating, and in a lot of people, it instilled in them a real fear of going anywhere difficult or trying things in a non-traditional fashion. That's how we got entire generations of people who never set foot in a dungeon until Karnors. Hell, I even had to worry about it less than about anyone, since I was a monk and could feign my way out of places no one else could survive, and I still didn't like it.

This was all discussed to death when Vanguard was in development, and some of the old EQ crowd was crying for a really tough death penalty, tough corpse recoveries, etc. I swear, some of them wouldn't be happy unless dying in the game caused a mallet to pop out of your monitor, which would swing down and hammer your balls.

I don't understand that sentiment, really. I mean, remember stuff like the SOV fear debacle way way back when. How much did they lose from all that? How many levels, how much money, etc? How can that be considered "fun"? Tear-your-hair-out frustrating, yes, but how can that be seen as fun?

Anyway, as to the original question of the topic: A friend of mine has been talking up Pirates of the Burning Sea, at least if you join their equivalent of a guild, and participate in some of the big port battles, etc. Basically, he says it's a lot like the old game Pirates! turned into an MMO, so a lot of crafting and out-of-ship stuff got added in. I haven't tried it myself, so I can't comment one way or the other.

games that don't have a death penalty just inspire stupid play

I'd rather have overly cautious players than stupid fuckers that don't care (aka wow fanbois)

yeah they went out on a limb and they got served. made them all more experienced players, too, probably. everquest made people work for shit and i don't think it's a coincidence that most people that played vintage EQ complain about not being able to find a decent MMO these days. Valnas from my first week of EQ ever contacted me a while ago out of the blue via MSN and said he's still looking for another one.

i just play diablo 2 now because it's basically perfect and it's never going to change or get nerfed at this point. it's the only game i still get pissed at and turn off when i get in tight situations. i could never get pissed at titan quest because nothing ever happens except the raping of millions of mobs by you. you die, you spawn with your gear, you lose 1% of your xp and click your tombstone and gain it all back... i mean... what's the fuckin point? anybody in the entire world could beat that game. accessibility, like with music, is gonna be the death of good video games

if i found an MMO that had "difficulties" i'd be in heaven. like servers for the pussies that want their gear on them after they die and no xp loss and faster xp gain etc etc and then servers for the diehards that wanna corpse run, spend three days getting one level, and not deal with my other MMO pet peeves like instances.... then that'd be incredible

but it's funny how you don't understand how someone can enjoy those things. i can't understand how someone wouldn't. losing is the best part of anything because it makes you better. it sounds like you're the kind of gamer that plays all your games on Easy

I don't think they make legitimately difficult games anymore.

I've not come across any anyways...

I think you are confusing difficult and masochistic.

Most older gamers have gotten to the point where they don't mind challenge, but as Arlos said the frustration and pain for the sake of danger just is dumb, and bad design, and at least to me not fun.

Yeah I hear where you are comin from Arlos, but all that was part of the fun for me. Like Tikker said, Id rather have over cautious players than a bunch of stupid fucks who dont have anything to worry about. Bein over cautious because you could lose a lot was part of the beauty of it~

I understand the mindset of wiping for 8+ hours and cr'ing but eventually you do kill CT. I think at the beginning it was a badge of honor for some of the top guilds on the Nameless at the time. Everyone knew you earned your kill. That was back in the days though where there were so few MMO's. Hell when LoS and Sanct etc were breaking fear and hate it was EQ or UO mostly. Nowadays there is a plethora of games catering to almost any playstyle so to have 8 hours of wipes and cr's would mean their customer base will go elsewhere, regardless of the "Badge of honor" aspect. It sad but gamers nowadays want a minimum of challenge with more reward. Not to say everyone is like that. But for a MMO company they will cater to the maximum number of players that they possibly can. It's a whole new mindset as opposed to the way many of us were taught to play.

As an example I camped my SMR in Guk for 6 days straight 12ish hours a day. I never did see it drop but I got an FBSS a day or so later and traded it to a rogue from LoS (Brionca I think)for a SMR that had dropped. That was one of many many camps I did through my EQ life. There is almost no way nowadays that the majority of gamers have the "staying power" to do something like that. If they don't get their drop after 2 hours they will make posts about it and complain.

I'll honestly be surprised if there is ever again another game with time sinks like EQ had. It appeals to some folks yes, but to the vast majority they want a quick fix and game developers know this and base the game around this fact. In the end it's about the $$$ and a larger playerbase = more $$$.

raster ftw

Yeah, I did the Raster camp. You know what? I didn't find sitting in one spot in 1 dungeon clearing the same 2 rooms over and over and over again for 12 hours straight to be "fun". I even tried Stormfeather once. I think I spent something like 22 straight hours camping for that stupid mob, only to find I'd lucked into one of the times it would skip its spawn that time around. I found that so infuriating and un-fun that I literally didn't do a single other quest my entire time in EQ, except for absolutely required quests for things like keys, or quests that involved getting a drop from a boss mob, followed by handing it in to get your McGuffin.

There's difficulty and then there's just stupid timesinks. I don't know how many of the people complaining have ever gotten to do the more modern raid encounters in WOW. A lot of them are legitimately difficult. Not hard because you have to CR for 8 hours, but hard because they take a lot of planning, and then everyone executing their job just right. But that intricacy doesn't depend on random idiocies, like some of the EQ encounters did. I mean, how was it "fun" for an enchanter to spend 4 hours at The Rathe doing nothing but staring at the back of the cave clicking their mez button over and over again?

I meant it in all games more than just MMOs.

you were lazy tho arlos ;)

the difference in EQ, or maybe more the difference they were aiming at, was that most of the higher end shit was supposed to be rare. it was like WoW where everyone could have everything with no effort

there was supposed to be some sort of badge of honor to having owned certain stuff

I dunno, think about the pre-Luclin days

some one would run past, and just from looking at them, you could tell what items they were wearing

Read the thread title, goof!

My big problem isn't an MMOs difficulty, it's finding something new and original.

i really miss that

[quote"Arlos"] even tried Stormfeather once. I think I spent something like 22 straight hours camping for that stupid mob[/quote]

and you're still talkin about it four years later or whatever. how often do you reminisce about beating bowser in mario? not very many... because you pressed two buttons to do it. EQ rapes you. no other game has ever been as hard except some MUDs or AD&D or something

I have a lot of very fond memories of EQ, as it was the first MMO I had ever played. What I miss, though, is not the competition, hatred between guilds, drama, and frustration of all the things mentioned above. I miss all the antics - I miss binding people in mid air in Kelethin. I miss giving swords to wasps in the newbie area. I miss splitting 0 0 0 100000 and seeing who was too cheap to destroy their copper so they walked around massivly encumbered. THAT stuff was fun to me. Not losing exp when someone in your group was an idiot. Not sitting LFG for *hours* only to sit more *hours* in some camp killing the same 15-20 things over, and over, and over. EQ did a lot of things right, but I can't help but feel that the people who went through the pain of early EQ and the hell levels, and staring at your book while you med, etc. only wish it on other people because *they* had to go through it. It's the "walking 10 miles uphill to school in the snow barefoot" mentality. "You kids these days have it so easy! Back in MY day...."

While I miss a lot of things about EQ, I love being able to log in for 30 minutes and accomplish something in WOW. I love the fact that I can roll any class I want and have reasonable soloing abilities. I love that it doesn't take months to level up a character to experience the high level stuff. I can invest a few days and see what dungeons are like as a rogue, or a warlock, or a priest. I despised leveling in EverQuest, so I never invested any real time in another character besides my main. In WOW, I have numerous alts of varying levels, with a number of them 70. With a busier life right now, I really appreciate being able to make my character amount to something without investing just a stupid amount of time.

and that's exactly what I hate about every other game out there

every can solo, so most people do

no one knows how to group properly, and it makes raiding more painful because of it

You haven't spent much time at L70, have you. That's pretty much the main thing to do at L70, if you want to progress, so people get proficient at it fairly rapidly.

Alternately, you join a good guild, and you group with guildmates. You knew back in LOS in EQ that you wouldn't be stuck in a single-group dungeon with a bunch of raving morons if you grouped with guildmates, yes? Well, find a decent guild in WOW and you can be sure of the same thing.
