I have to get my review typed up tonight, but the form that was emailed to me for Microsoft Word is locked. I tried opening an old document but they are locked as well. I went to tools and protect document was grayed out. Can anyone help me please? How do I unlock this so I can get this done so I don't get in trouble? thanks ahead of time

push the hack button on your keyboard

if you have an older keyboard that doesn't have a hack button, just hold down the alt key and push f4

I'm not sure what you mean by locked. Does it want a password? If so, hit "read only", and then complete your work and choose "save as" to save it by a different name.

I mean it wont let me type at all. Period. It says "This document is locked" It does not ask for a password

(edit) nvm - reading comprehension ftw....

is it by chance opening in Word viewer as opposed to actual Word?

If it was only in reading layout, that shouldn't change her ability to unprotect the document. (nvm, reading comprehension for me too - I see you said opening with the wrong software)

The only thing I could suggest with the info provided is to copy it all and paste it to a new document.. that shouldn't be restricted, even if it is protected.

Check how much free space you have on the hard drive.

Also, check and make sure you've got a temp directory defined.

Only time I've seen something like this is if there's no space to create a temporary working copy of the document when you open it, so it opens everything as read-only. That can happen either if there's literally no space left on the drive, or if there's no place defined for it to put it.

Start Menu

Control panel

System

Click the "Advanced" tab.

Click the Environment Variables button.

Check in the top window, for the lines Temp and TMP, and see what they're set to. Make sure the directory they list actually exists. May be the same directory for both, that's fine, as long as it exists. If it doesn't, create it so that it does.

Check the bottom window for Temp and TMP, and see what they're set to. Make sure the directory they list actually exists. May be the same directory for both, that's fine, as long as it exists. If it doesn't, create it so that it does.

Try pasting the contents into a notepad first, then recopy and paste into Word. You'll have to fix formatting, but that should hopefully take off protection.

Protection on the original document is irrelevant if newly created documents likewise cannot be edited, which is what she's claiming.

Is it a full version of Office or is it a trial version?

It was Microsoft Office, and it was the full version. It was a teachers edition, so it allowed three activations. One of which was given to me Over a year ago.

If it's a legitimate copy, then call Microsoft Support directly and have them help you with it, if it's still a problem. That will most certainly get you faster results than posting here.
