So... I watched the death toll from Myanmar climb from 300 some to 3,000, to now over 100,000. I've watched as the government refused to let foreign countries in to distribute aid, and sometimes wouldn't accept the aid to begin with.

But this article today takes the cake.

Headline: Boat carrying Myanmar aid sinks.

So they finally, finally allow someone to provide them aid, and the boat sinks. I clicked on the article to read it thinking maybe something unforeseen happened in the ocean, and they were lost at sea or something. But no...

The boat was making the 12-hour journey from Yangon to Mawlamyinegyun when it hit a submerged tree trunk and began taking water near Bogalay town, which was extensively damaged by the cyclone, the IFRC said.

So they are in shallow enough water that they hit a submerged tree trunk HARD enough that it was able to fuck up their boat enough to sink, and they weren't able to save many of the supplies.

The whole thing smacks of the Katrina disaster where it was just one fuck up after another that lead to greater complications than anyone anticipated. I feel so badly for those poor people and hope that their government starts allowing aid to come in.

The whole thing is unbelievable.

i dunno if you remember or not, but the US wouldn't allow foreign aid in for a super long time too. i find it ironic each time i see the US criticize Burma for the same thing

i agree, but we at least had the resources and potentential to take care of katrina rather easily. our government was just incredibly inefficient with them.

the case in burma is quite different, they dont have the people or the resources to take care of this in any fashion whatsoever.

doesn't change the fact that lots of extra folks died because you turned down foreign help in early days

regardless

burma is being retarded

Except the government in power there is an oppressive dictatorship that is widely known to not give a flying fuck about the people under their control...

Lots of similarities to Katrina... :ugh:
