WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

"We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child," said a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry's.

Also, that Swiss restaraunt was banned from using the human milk...

We should start a letter writing campaign to the PETA stating how in horribly short supply human breast milk is already, making sure to bring attention to the fact that this request by them would be taking away from human children who are desperately in need of it..
The banks that supply it for mothers of sickly infants in the NICU, extreme premature babies, mothers who can not breastfeed or produce no milk, multiple births, etc. are constantly in need of suppliers.

The main issue with most fur is how the animals are trapped, etc. Many of them are made such that either the animal slowly strangles, or it's foot gets crushed and the bones shattered, while it's still left alive to slowly starve to death. Traditional trapping methods really are extraordinarily barbaric and cruel to the animals. That's the biggest reason PETA and so many other groups are so against fur coats, etc.

There are some fur farms, where animals are raised from birth to be killed for their furs and are killed in a humane fashion, just like cows and pigs and such are supposed to be for food, but there's not many of them, and the fur produced is more expensive, from what I understand.

So, they do have a point when it comes to fur, actually.

Idiocies like THIS one, however, are indefensible.

Um, there's a rather huge difference between harvesting the hides of cows that are being slaughtered for food purposes anyway, and inhumane fur traps that cause immense pain, suffering and a slow death among the animals that fur is harvested from.

leather: utilitarian, durable

now, do i like the methods used to harvest fur? nope. but i don't like the methods employed to make meat for my burgers either. however, i don't care enough about either to go vegetarian, or dump a bucket of blood on some piece of shit celeb wearing a mink boa. thus, the methods with which these products are obtained being on equal footing, all that remains is the difference in affected social class.
