Another prevalent, but far less nasty, error is the sign touting the express line at some grocery stores. Many signs say “twelve items or less” when, of course, they should read “twelve items or fewer.” The word “less” is used for non-count situations, e.g., “there is less water in your cup than in mine.” If you can count the objects, you use “fewer.” Administrators at some supermarkets have mercifully figured this out, but other companies lag sadly behind. Just a few weeks ago, we were watching a movie on the TNT channel, which identifies itself in the lower right corner of the screen with this annoying little blunder: “TNT - More Movies….Less Commercials”). Argh! Fewer commercials! Could someone please contact Ted Turner about this?
