Calif woman gets 6 years for fatal texting crash

Sat Apr 4, 1:02 pm ET

REDDING, Calif. – A woman who crashed into a line of stopped vehicles while text-messaging on her cell phone has been sentenced to six years in a California prison for killing a woman in one of the vehicles.

Deborah Matis-Engle was sentenced Friday by a judge in Redding, Calif.

Investigators said Deborah Matis-Engle was speeding and text messaging when she slammed into the vehicles stopped at a construction zone in August 2007.

Shasta County prosecutor Stephanie Bridgett said the 49-year-old woman had paid several bills by cell phone in the moments before the crash.

She was in the middle of one of those transactions when she struck a vehicle that burst into flames, killing 46-year-old Petra Winn.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Stotter said he will appeal.

I see people text-messaging at least 10 times a day. Scary shit.

the woman should of died in the crash and removed herself from the gene pool. this is manslaughter and should be treated as such. 6 years is lenient compared to causing the death of another person

Good. They should go after people who talk on phones too.

California now actually does have a law requiring using some kind of hands-off mechanism for cell phone calls in car. Bluetooth headset, etc.

They did also recently make texting while driving illegal as well.

They need to make it kill on site for those godamn women that talk, put on make up, and drive all at the same time. Have an open season and bounty on them. and you can always tell when those idiots are doin it too, always lookin up and down, up and down

I always pull over when I get a call or have to make one or whatever, and then a couple weeks ago, the one time in a million years I try to answer a call and drive because it was an important one, I end up almost rear ending someone.

I have never been able to understand putting on eye makeup while driving. I wouldn't go poking around my eye with anything while I was driving.

Nuh uh. Especially since I heard the stories about women going to the emergency room with a mascara wand stuck in their eyeballs.

I talk on the phone while in the car. I have also texted while in a car, but I only do that at red lights. If the light turns green, I just don't send the text, or finish it next light. There's plenty of those in Atlanta.

Soup? Pfft, put that shit in a cup and drink it up. Pizza is hard. Tacos are hard to eat while sitting at a table, I couldnt do that while driving. I'm a pretty bad driver to begin with, so I try not to do anything that would otherwise occupy my attention from the road.

pizza is easy. just fold and stuff into mouth.

breaking up some weed, packing, lighting, filling, and emptying a bong by yourself while driving. THAT'S a challenge.

I have driven next to people in traffic who have a fully opened newspaper in front of them.

And why would you drive and smoke a bong? That's what dugout's were invented for.

Yea man tuggan isnt kiddning. It just depends on who ya are how well you can multi task while driving. I used to smoke blunts and get road head while looking for addresses from time to time. Thats gotta be 10 times harder than talking on a phone or putting on make up.

When I worked mornings, I remember people reading books on the way into work every morning. Never understood how they did it, they do make books on tape/cd.

never heard it called a dugout, but that makes sense

'round these parts we call 'em "oneies" or "oneys" or "1ies" or however the fuck you want to spell it

it's pronounced one-ee, as in good for one hit

I text between lights and during traffic jams. When I talk on the phone I use a bluetooth speaker thing.

Also, every woman who goes to the hospital with a mascara wand in her eyeball, sorry, they deserved it.
