okay fair enough, but why is he a role model to begin with? it's fucking golf! unless you want to say he's a black man succeeding in a white man pastime, i guess
tell you what though, as long as we're talking about role models being naughty i would jump at the chance to hit a spliff with michael phelps and/or tim lincecum

I guess it's difficult for you to take Golf seriously living in the mid west. I'm not sure if you've ever played before but it's pretty hard. Tiger's ability is unreal. There has never been anyone like him and we probably wont see another golfer that has achieved what he has by his age for a very long time.

By definition, Brin has a point but regardless of what you want to call him, or anyone other pro sports player, the moment you show up on TV, you're no longer "normal" and you just entered the realm of entertainment. No pro-sports player is just an athlete, they're a celebrity, entertainer, etc, it is (wrongly) assumed that any of these type folks are "above" the rest of humanity re: any personal or professional flaws.

And alot of people around here play music for whatever idiot reason. It's called a hobby, you like what you like. I think you're more of an idiot for knocking other people because you think their hobby is stupid.
And let's be honest, I think you're more turned off by the fact that it's a past-time typically reserved for the upper class.

zan: i know you're an MLB h8r but at least for the "fat-ass roid-heads," running and jumping is a fundamental part of gameplay. giving baseball players a cart would alter the game significantly, whereas giving golfers a cart only (mercifully) decreases the duration without affecting the game itself
ginz: if you want to call golf a hobby, fine, that actually helps my argument. all i've been getting at this whole thread is that you can't call a golfer an athlete. i know it's "alot" for you to grasp but try to keep up. oh, and to play into your predictably limp-wristed anti-music whining (can't you find anything else to argue about?), that would be like calling a drummer an athlete. actually, maybe we should consider drummers athletes, since drumming requires more physical coordination than golfing

And I'm not sure what you meant by this as I'm a huge music person. Try to keep up. I was just saying that while you might think golf is idiotic, some people might think music is idiotic. I just used the music example because I know you're into making music for fun. People like what they like. It's immature to bash someone for something they enjoy, especially if the person doing the bashing doesn't know the first thing about the hobby they are calling idiotic.

And yes, Tiger Woods is an athlete. What he does requires physical strength, perfect form and takes tens of thousands of hours of practice. Just because you probably think it's gay doesn't make it any less a sport.
And no, drummers aren't athletes because drumming isn't a sport considering drumming lacks the basic definition of a sport, which is competition. And don't argue that drummers compete against each other because that is a pretty big stretch to try and make your point.

golfing isn't really a sport either
it's exactly as much of a sport as darts
call it a competition if you will
a true sport you have to be competing head to head, ie you try to score, I try to stop you
if you're just taking turns, and comparing the output it's not a sport

strength? that's a stretch. most of the "strength" involved in driving a ball comes from the leverage of the swing, which any weakling can accomplish. agility? you might have an argument there, if you consider agility to include accuracy with a drive or putt. and stamina? grats, you can walk a few miles! being great at
anything requires "perfect form and tens of thousands of hours of practice," from golf to painting to writing to music. are painters athletes? are violinists?
also gg on assuming i "don't know the first thing" about golf just because i don't like it or think it's a waste of time, vry ccc

Does that mean that running track, swimming, gymnastics and a myriad of other things are not sports? They don't involve trying to score or stopping someone from trying to score. Most of those like gold are about competing with others to achieve victory. Golf also does require strength, holding and maintianing perfect form takes more then practice, it takes strength to do.

Definition of sport: an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition. Yes, that includes golf
There are thousands of top flight basketball and baseball players. Perhaps millions in the world who could play at the professional level.
There's only one Tiger Woods. Nobody else can do what he does.
Athlete to me seems to be overused. Golfers and Nascar drivers, and heck even the 7 foot basketball mongoloids who can barely walk and chew game to me are a stretch to call athletes, but they all fit into the definition of sport.
To me no 'team' guy is as much an athlete as Usain Bolt.
There's only one sure thing. Curling is not a fucking sport.
