iPhone, anyone have one?

Do they force you to buy a plan when you have an iPhone? Or can you use it just for apps/as an iPod without having a plan?
I'd like to get one purely for app testing purposes, and certainly don't want to have to pay each month for that.
If a plan of some kind is required, can the iPod touch run just about any app an iPhone can (that doesn't use the additional features of the phone, obviously)?

Pretty sure if you have any Mac at all, you can spend the $95 for the iPhone developer kit, which will give you the capability to test apps as if they were on the iPhone themselves in a virtual machine sort of setup, I do believe. So, if app development is really all you want to do, I don't think you HAVE to have an iPhone itself, just the dev kit. Check for yourself to make sure, though, obviously.

Actually, I intend on developing apps in Flash/Flex/ActionScript, as the soon to become public beta Flash CS5 allows you to publish iPhone apps.
I do not have a Mac.

From my experience iPod Touch can run anything the iPhone can. Like you stated though, if it lacks hardware to do a specific function then it doesn't work. For example, I have a GPS program on my iPod, that runs and checks everything, and the only part that doesn't work is the GPS itself.

The Touch doesn't have a camera right? Only the phone?

The touch doesn't have a camera or a mic. Any app that requires those two won't work, everything else will work fine (assuming you can connect to a wireless network of course).

I have one and support several for my company, you have to buy a plan. There are sources to buy an unlocked device but they can go 700+ and up.
2 year plan, basic voice and unlimited domestic non-comercial data plan should run your roughly 70ish monthly recurring, 32GB iphone would run your around 399ish.

Yea I bought mine about a year ago and rarely use it. It's a neat toy but the apps are pretty aweful and I don't listen to music. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I bought it.
