I guess with 2 guys having off the field character issues, they figured they could save face by jettisoning Holmes and everyone would forget that Ben's an idiot too?

Holmes is in the last year of his contract and is suspended for 4 games by the league. So the Jets gave up a 5th rounder for 12 games with Holmes.

it's a shot across the bow at Ben and jettisoning a guy who's had several run-ins with the law. 5th rounder is kinda weaksauce tho. IMO he's worth a lot more than that, issues and all
