My wife and I are currently verizon customers but our contract is up so it's time to either renew or find something else.

Our current phone bill is $130 a month with no data plan, 1400 minutes and unlimited text. The 1400 minutes are used when you call land-lines or non-verizon mobile phones.

I was looking at Sprint last night and their "Unlimited Family Data Plan" includes unlimited data and GPS, 1500 minutes and unlimited text. Their 1500 minutes are used just when you can land-lines. All mobile to mobile is free. This plan is $130 a month, same as my verizon plan.

Plus, now with verizon, if you want to get a half way decent phone, you have to pay at least $9.99 a month for their basic data plan. The phones that they offer that don't require at least the basic data plan are awful. So right off the bat our phone bill would go up $20 a month (considering it's $9.99 per phone extra for the data plan).

I looked at the Sprint coverage map and it's "Excellent" on the east coast. Are there any catches I need to be aware of before taking the plunge?

You should talk to a Verizon rep about your plan... that doesn't quite sound right.
My sister and I share a plan (we set it up 8 or 9 years ago). We recently re-did everything because we both wanted full data plans from Verizon.

We pay $30 for the first line, $10 for each additional & $40 each for full data packages. Between the two of us, we have 1200 any-time minutes, unlimited text, & unlimited nights and weekends.

I agree with 10sun, something doesn't sound right regarding your costs, I could see you paying 130 for both devices with full data plans but not just voice.

Check out the 1400 minute plan. Add taxes and the monthly maintence fee and it's $133 a month.

Like I said, it's just for unlimted talk and text. The data plan is $30 extra per phone, so my bill would be $200 where the same thing at Sprint is $130. With Sprint it's actually better considering Sprint's mobile to mobile is ALL cell phones and Verizons mobile to mobile is just Verizon phones. Between land lines and non-verizon phones there are months where my wife and I will use between 800 and 900 minutes but the plan lower than the 1400 minute plan is 700 minutes, which we used to have but went over once and got a $240 bill.

Verizon screws you, period.

They all screw you LOL, but yeah, your minutes is what's screwing you on VW. I'd check all the sprint Ts & Cs, something there doesn't smell right. IMO sprint / nextel have a limited lifespan.

Ive talked to a few people who have Sprint and they said it was legit. $129.00 a month for 1500 minutes, unlimited text and data plan.

The only rub would be if it didn't work in my area. But they give you 30 days to try the service and if you dont like it you can cancel. There are probably some pretty heavy restrictions on that though.

i've actually been following the major cell providers lately, at least as far as hardware goes

if you give any sort of shit about Android phones, take a look at the Evo which is rumored to drop on either 6/6 or 6/13. it's supposed to destroy all android-based competition (google has already given up on the nexus one), as well as a swath of iphone users who care about performance instead of just APPLE PRODUCT

now, as far as monthly service fees, i can't really say i am on top of what's what. i've been with Sprint for so long that i get a pretty sweet deal, and i've already been flagged for an elite plan that, for about $65/mo, will get me:

• more minutes than i use
• unlimited messaging
• unlimited data
• free nights and weekends
• "free nights" start at 7pm
• cost of phone (~$200 with a 2-year plan) financed into my monthly bill instead of paid up front
• another 15% off per month just for being a county employee
• a free USB 3G modem stick

Ginz, we have been Sprint customers for near 8 years now and the plan you're asking about is the one we are using currently.
Our cost is a little more because we have 3 lines plus we also carry insurance on all 3 phones.

The plan is legit, and aside from the fact that Verizon does, in fact, have overall better coverage, so far I've not had a problem with them at all.

The Anytime, AnyMobile is exactly what it says, and since most of the phones we call regularly are mobile, we eat between the 3 of us around 300 minutes out of the 1500 total from the anytime minutes.
We were actually wanting to switch to Verizon last year only because they carry the Android loaded lines, but I'm completely stoked about the new 4G HTC EVO phone coming out this summer that is loaded with Android (that's gonna be my new phone) through Sprint.

Was going to go with the Blackberry tour but after reading about the 4G evo we're going to wait until June.

4G wont be available in my area until end of year but from what I am reading, it will perform better than my internet at home. So I can get rid of my internet at home and use the cell phone as my wifi hotspot. I just got a new PC with a wireless card too, all the stars are aligning.

I have Sprint and against all the other networks they certainly have the best deal. If you're the type to be able to manage without calling customer service very often then I'd go with Sprint. I like everything about them minus 1 thing and that's that they have the WORST customer service team on the planet. That's not limited to just cell phone companies either.
