so i've got this big box of cards from when i was a kid. i don't have any super-great rare finds but there are some decent rookies in there-- ken griffey jr, omar vizquel, mark grace, etc but the rest of them are basically filler

i want to flip them for cash but i don't want to get fleeced on the value, is there a way to assess the value of this collection that won't take too long?

Good question. I was kind of wondering the same thing. Seems like unless you have pre-1960 rookie cards or some of the "error" cards, they aren't worth the paper they're printed on anymore....

I have a reggie jackson 2nd year and a carlton fisk rookie that aren't worth jack according to beckett or whatever.

found a randy johnson rookie and a craig biggio rookie

i will probably save the cards that mean something and just sell off the rest for a 20-spot lol

Cards that are post 1980 were really mass produced, and like someone said before, unless its an error card, they really are not worth much. However, there are still a few valuable ones. Best thing to do is grab a Beckett price guide at a card shop and look them up. IIRC Beckett is what most card collectors use as the best indicator.

i think ebay would be the best indicator. i remember if you took a card to someone and said "beckett says it's $40!" they'd say "well i'm not beckett so here's 5"

in same boat, got trading card bug from 92-94 and will have a biannual random brainfart about wanting to sell them and then i think of the research needed and i become very tired.

That's like hockey cards up here. Everyone and their dog jumped on the band wagon in the early 90's and consequently they aren't worth jack.

Certainly Drem. The value of a card is only what someone is willing to pay for it. However, by grabbing a Beckett, it at least gives him some idea of which ones have a value. Using this, he can then put the ones that are worth something up on Ebay, or take to a card show and sell them there.

With the more valuable ones, sometimes it is worth getting them graded. It can jack up the value (at least it used too, not so sure anymore).

I collected baseball/basketball cards as a kid and eventually gave up trying to sell them over the years. Whatever value could be extracted from them wasn't worth the (time) cost of researching individual card values or finding a venue to sell them... Like others have said, 99% appear to be pretty worthless if they aren't old or misprinted or whatever. I kept a little binder of all the Michael Jordan / Shaq / Magic Johnson cards I had and just gave away the rest as a Christmas gift to an uncle that likes sports. I'd say just hang onto the famous names and dump the rest for whatever you can get in a pinch.
